Overdrive solenoid question

Overdrive solenoid question.

So I pulled the solenoid on the overdrive to inspect.
There is a brass sleeve located between the solenoid and the plunger. It has a small flange on one end. I took it out last night. Now I can't remember which way the flange goes. it seems to fit both ways. Haynes and Bently really don't show this part in detail.

Which is right? the first photo or the second one?

I'm not sure anmd the only thing I could dig up is this schematic I sent to Naomi&Bill. It's been almost five years since I was into my overdrive for repairs.
