Hi,
For those who have used POR15, what did you use to clean up the metal before painting. I'm painting the rear axle tube and diff.
I know POR15 sells a prep cleaner but I didn't buy it thinking I could use whatever I had in my garage. The directions say not to use cleaners like brake or carb cleaner.
Can I use simple green or mineral spirits?

Reportedly, any good degreaser will work if it dries clean. You will still be required to apply Metal Ready as well before painting.

Ditto Carl's comments. Anything will work for degreasing as long as you use the Metal Ready before painting.

I've been very happy with my POR 15 experience. As a matter of fact, I'm spraying a second coat of Chassis Black on my Gipsy frame tonight!

Don't skip the Metal Ready step.
When I do, POR15 sometimes fails to stick well. When I use Metal Ready it sticks like epoxy glue and rock hard.

metal ready is key. I have had it peel if I didn't use it. Never peeled if I used it.

The marine clean is pretty inexpensive (it can be cut with water) so there is no reason NOT to use it either, IMO.

It is key to follow their directions to the letter for best results

What kind of precautions does one take when using POR? Respirator?

The fumes are about the same as those from oil based house paint. It irritates your throat. So act accordingly. It also takes a long time to dry/harden.
