Hi,
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm getting everything together to paint my 1967 GT project car in the garage. This is my fourth GT and always wanted a red one but as many have mentioned, that is the most usual choice. Since I have a BRG 1973 GT also sitting in the garage, that color is out.
In other posts, I have seen the comment that the GT is the "poor man's Aston Martin" so that got me thinking. Of course, the most famous Aston Martin is the James Bond DB5 which was silver in the movie but I think (not sure) was dove grey in the book. So, I was thinking how would my car look that silver with a black leather interior and wire wheels. I have done several internet searches for the exact silver color but can't seem to find anything. Has anyone else considered this and if so were you able to find the "correct" silver color? I'm building this car for my personl use and not concerned about resale.
Thanks
Ron

A really nice color combo in that range is the Grampian Grey with a red interior.
I shot some PPG Omni AU that was called Viper Blue. This is the blue that the new Toyota Landcruisers are.
It went on nice and has a very deep colour. Would look great on a B.
Lee beat me to it. Grampian Grey and red interior is my favorite Gt color combo. Only found on 67-69' GT's

Ron, that's agreat idea and it would look very well. Chevy has a very lt.gray on some of the larger cars form say 2001 - 2003. I think that would make a very nice looking "B" but I think it would look better on a RB "B" than CB. Silver w/ Black always sharp. Good luck.

Jim, I have always said that blue on the toyota's would be a great color on a B. I also like the yellow they have on those as well.
The RIGHT silver looks great on GTs.
A friend and sometimes lurker here has a CB GT in silver with Minilite clones. He also had the interior done in Claret or perhaps Burgundy leather and matching cut pile carpeting.
Breath taking.
If John is listening I hope he PMs you with some photos.

I've always liked silver. There's a guy in the Phoeniz, AZ area who sells MGs on E-bay on a regular basis. I assume he's in the restoration business. He had a silver GT about two(ish) years ago and it was beautiful. So, for illustrative purposes only, here's a pic (I copied it for inpsiration, if and when I get my own GT). If the gentleman in Phoeniz objects to my posting it, let me know and I'll take it down.
Cheers,
Glen
x4 for grampian grey. If I ever get a GT i will paint it that color.
Grey or Silver with black interior gets my vote (never liked red interiors in any car.. just my opinion).
Two of my last three daily driver cars were Silver and my latest car is Graphite Grey. When clean and shined up, the Graphite Grey looks awesome.. but the Silver colors wore better and hid scratches way better. Every scratch in my Graphite Grey car I can see from a mile away.
Truthfully, I'm not a fan of the GT body styling (not to offend our GT driving brethren) BUT, I really like that Silver GT that glen posted, looks really nice.. The way the chrome and sliver compliments each other is very refined looking. It actually makes me reconsider my opinions on the GTs. I think it even looks better then a BRG GT ! Same goes for the CB Roadsters I've seen in Silver.. I think they are some of the best looking B's out there.
To me, the Silver makes the car look more expensive as well. If you go with Silver, don't worry about resale value (even though you said you weren't), Because a study that was done found that Silver cars had the highest resale value over other color cars... even red.
If you are going to shoot your own colour it would be best to stay away from silvers, blacks and metallic finishes. Base/clear is best avoided. That is unless you are an experienced painter.
All,
Thanks for your responses and a special thanks to Glenn for the picture. That is exactly what I had in mind. It really looks great.
Glenn - any idea at all what silver that is???
Ron
The Platimum color used on the home market LE would look good on a GT.
John
Look into Mercedes silvers. I've seen a few MGAs and MGBs this color and it looks very nice.
With greys and silvers you are going to have to be VERY careful, some of them come out redder or bluer than you expect.
Like Steve said, the Mercedes silvers are very nice. One of my favorites has always been Anthracite Grey from the mid 80's. Very dark silver metallic. Kind of a metallic Grey. Seriously, don't make a decision until you see this color.
And by the way, a Grampion Grey GT is prolly the best looking color for that car. I am forced to agree with Jack, a nice Oxblood leather would be very nice.
Have fun
I had my '72 BGT painted a metallic gunmetal gray and I get a lot of compliments on it.
Ron, I don't know if this helps you any as these pics do not have real good lighting etc., but this is Metallic Platinum. It is a Chrysler color and in the sun and certain lighting really jumps but is not 'in your face' overpowering.

So does anyone have a photo of the "Grampian Grey"? Sounds like it is the crowd favorite.

My GT,
Grampian Grey with Black leather,
Sorry can you tell Im trying to sway you to that colour, not silver! ha.
Also I agree with the other guys about Grampian/red leather, amazing combo!
I really like Grampian Grey but I also Really understand the draw of the pewter silvers (what color was the Coune Berlinette done in?). I am really thinking of that as well for my GT (along with several other colors as well :) ).
There was a metallic pale blue color for BGTs in I think '68 or '69, that I've always been partial to. If you're set on silver, I like the Mercedes Diamond Silver Metallic on my 2005 SLK 350. Just the tiniest hint of blue to it. Very elegant.
This is a link to an unfinished BGT project that is painted Aston Martin Meteorite Silver. I really wanted to see this finished but it may never be. The owner, a fellow Windsor Detroit MC Club member, died suddenly and unexpectedly last month.

All,
Thanks again for your opinions. I'm starting to like the Grampian Grey. Since this will be the first car that I have tried to paint, probably not a good ideal starting out with a silver or metallic as was pointed out.
Will have to do more research and thinking about this. My original plan was to use one of Summit's or Eastwood's stock colors. They both have a very good line of acrylic urethanes that are a high quality and very reasonable cost. You can get the epoxy primer, 2K primer, color, and clear from Summit for around $300!!!
Ron
Don't give up on silver if that's what you want! It can look nice...
That grey is nice, how obout OEW? with either black/red or red interior, I've always loved those combos!
B
Ron, I'm glad you liked the color. I'm sorry, but I don't know the actual paint color; I'm not even sure if the seller mentioned or not. Middle-age y'know. FWIW, my wife has a 2002 Toyota RAV-4 that is similar in tone.
And just to reiterate: if I ever get a GT, it's going to look just like this. Woof!
Here's the back end of the GT.
Cheers,
Glen
My roadster is silver, it's a late model jeep color called silverstone metallic. It was the second car I painted and I didn't have any problems spraying the metallic.
I just bought the paint today for my gt v8. After YEARS (literally) of wringing my hands over the color choice I went with mercedes mars red. I know everyone has a red mg, but the problem is I didn't have one. I honestly don't see that many red gt's around here, and I'm pretty sure it'll be the only one in Beatrice, NE. :)
A gallon of Omni base in the mars red was $135, which was WAY cheaper than I thought it was going to be.
Simon, too much green background in your photo op, looks like my wife's green passat wagon! Sweet ride ya got though, haven't seen it in awhile!
That Aston Martin Meteorite Silver GT (sadly unfinished) looks amazing. That with a black leather interior gets my vote.
I saw one of these with chrome wires for sale many years ago, stunning looking car!

Thanks Bryan! Here's a couple of different shots:
I am a big fan of the silver in GlenP's post. My vision is that silver on my 71BGT with wire wheels. I would also like to have my grill chromed in that dark fishmouth! Can that be done or is the metal too weak?

Mmmm....very COOL car ;-)

I'm not partial to red interiors. The only exception for a 'B, to me, would be a Grampian Gray 'B GT.
We painted our 74 GT Metallic silver with burgundy leather interior . The silver is a current VW-Audi color. Beautiful combination . John
All,
Thanks again for all of your opinions and pictures. I think I am more confused than before but that is a good thing since I now have more options. I still have a few months until it is consistently warm enough to paint so I have time to make up my mind.
Am trying to find more information on spraying silver/metallic. The only thing I have found so far is to put some clean ball bearings in the paint cup to keep it sitrred.

Am trying to find more information on spraying silver/metallic. The only thing I have found so far is to put some clean ball bearings in the paint cup to keep it sitrred and to orient any separate panels (hood, trunk, doors, etc) the way they would be on the car when spraying. I guess this provides a uniform orientation of the paint.

Ah, much better! Nice color. Wel, really, nice colors in all the pics! Sure has been fun looking at all these beauties, makes me want to get out the detailing box and do some pre-season sprucing!
Someone on this site did their roadster in a beautiful silver and did the interior blue. As I recall we all really liked that combo. Come to think of it, I had a '78 Corolla silver w. blue int.

Have you found the parts where it's harder to paint metallics so that there's consistent "metallic" effect, depending on how it's applied?
And how it's harder to blend in a repair?
Perhaps not the best choice for someone new to painting.
Derek,
I do understand that spraying metallics/silver is difficult at best and if I decide to go with that color/type of paint, I will probably get a professional to do it. I've already done the hard part..., fixed all of the rusted areas, blasted the car to bare steel and applied two coats of epoxy primer. The shell is sitting on a body cart so it will be easy for whoever paints it.
Fortunately, I have plenty of time to decide on final color. If I do decide on something solid like the Grampian Grey, I will spray it myself.
Thanks,
Ron
Being contrary a bit, I've never found non-original colors look quite "right" on an MGB or other old sports car. I like bright silver, but it's almost the most popular car color out there, and it never seemed very sports car-like to me.
I like Grampian Grey a lot especially with a red (or maroon) leather interior.
Now that would be one tasty GT. But any green, red, yellow, blue or whatever you like . . . you'll like.
Of course my favorite car color is white and that's the most popular car color of all, so what do I know? I'm trying to find the white BGT of my dreams to go with my white roadster. Or Grampian Grey. And I'm still partial to that 70s bracken orange for some reason.
Someone must have already posted this website, but it's a great one for colors on MGB's:
http://www.teglerizer.com/mgcolors/
Does anyone know whether the opalescent colors are as hard to get right as metallics?
Check out these jaguar colors. Not flat grey, not fully metallic.
this isn't the best picture but this is the colour I will be going for....
