What is the most cost-effective method? There are some great deals to be had but I was quoted almost $150 for shipping via FedEx for some front suspension parts.

Yes thie shipping is what kills you, On small items its not to bad. For my used parts here in the U.S. I deal with British Miles, and for new parts LBCarCo... I have saved lots of money with both companies.

The other day someone quoted me 55 pounds to ship a set of front brake pads.
I have heard that parcelforce is usually the best route for smaller packages but they might be on strike right now.

Jeeze, Matt. We oughta pool the shipping charges, draw straws, and one of us fly over and get the stuff. Bring 2 suitcases full of stuff back.

I feel sorry for you, but then someone out there has to drive Moss built cars.

I was surfing ebay uk yesterday and ran across a company selling MG parts
i emailed about minilights and shipping
think they were minilight lookalikes
but he quoted me 65 pounds for shipping which is about $110 US
i thought that was excellent for 4 wheels

Don't use FedEx then, I have have many things sent to me from the UK, and if they used their regular old post office it was the cheapest.

Like us using USPS, they have what I think is called "royal mail" - but, I'm not positive of the name.

Everytime I have bought from the UK. The shipping has been via Royal Post and have had very good rates.

Thanks, Carl. I'll email them back and ask if they'll do the postal thing.

The only problem with Royal Mail is the it doesn't provide a full trackable service and many UK companies won't use it for overseas sales because of this.

FedEx is one of the more expensive carrriers. There are cheaper ones. I sent a TC front axle and stub axles to the US for around £50 with DHL, fully trackable.

Carriers take size into account as well as weight.

All of the fuel pump parts I get from Burlen Fuel Systems are shipped via Parcel Force, which as been fairly reasonable over the years, but it has taken a jump recently, going from £15 for orders over £50 to £22.50. I just make sure that I keep my orders high enough to average out the shipping. I don't remember which shipper is used by the MGOC, but I remember thinking that it was reasonable even for a set of 4 wheels.
Cheers,

Most of the small packages I get are shipped Royal Mail. larger packages are much chepaer via DHL, if they set up a commercial account.

The electrical parts and wire I get from the UK come by ParcelForce (Royal Mail) - not cheap, but not outrageous. I wait until I have a fairly large order so that the cost is spread out - otherwise I get the parts from BW.

remember the shipping costs are off set with the tax you do not pay...about 18%. Andrew Hooper of the MGOC can give you a good rate. So if you send someone over to pick it all up you will pay the VAT also.

As long as the parts are being exported from the UK, you don't pay VAT, even if the parts are collected.

It's not as straightforward as having stuff sent by mail or carrier but it can be done.
