Nicely done- worth puttijng in the library IMO.............
Thanks Ralph,
Took your advice and added a couple more of the bad hubs.
Good idea, now I know what to look for. Would it be possible for you to re-shoot the used hub so that the splines are in focus like the pic of the new hub. That one is a really nice photo.
Thanks Paul.. The first pic is great, perfect.. The second is a bit blurry but I can see that the lsft side is worn to a point...
I'll try to get a couple better ones of the old hubs...for now i'll try these.
Great photos! The other way to check is if they are sharp. On my old ones, depending on which way you rubbed you hand on the splines they would almost cut you. I replaced all mine too.
Very nice camera angles Paul, people are always wondering how to tell if the splines are worn. One picture is worth ten thousand words. Indeed! With these photos it is easy to tell the worn from the new.
I've got one wheel (left rear) with sharp splines. I've heard them called "sharked" for some reason.
If I change the hub but keep the wheel, am I in danger of damaging the new hub?
A set of wheels is a different prospect from changing the hub.
Now take photos of new wheels and old wheel splines.
They seem to go first.
Nice pictures Paul. But you guys should know that the worn hub shown is -very- worn. A hub can look ok to the untrained eye or not be sharp like John's were and still be worn to the point of needing replacement. I tell people they should measure hubs with a dial caliper if they really want to know their condition. Almost nobody strokes enough splines to have enough experience to know by feel (or eye) how they are, but they readily accept advice to do that. New ones are 2.440" measuerd across the outside diameter of the hub, once they get down to 2.430" you should be looking for replacements.
I've seen more than worn hub, take out a new wheel as well. If you're going to invest big money in a nice set of alloy splined wheel or some Dayton, then good hubs are a must, because when the slip they destroy the wheel as well. I had a fellow club member have two hubs slip on two Minitor alloy wheels, he cost him like $600 to correct this mishap. Oh, and Moss has no provisions to sell you replacment spline adapters, only new wheels, Superlite however will sell you a new replacment adapters.

"
focus on the bad ones could be a little better--right at the edge of the splines.
