After getting all my pistons re-ringed, new inserts for shaft & rods, I decided to call for a check by an old mechanic who is a friend before I started assembly. He passed on this tip: Cut about an inch of rubber hose and insert it over the rod bolt. Turn the crank so that journal is at the bottom. The rubber hose "booties" will keep you from scoring or scratching the journal. You can tap the assembly in and fit the rod caps. Worked like a charm just now.

use either these or the commercially available booties (usually free with Clevite rod bearings) on ALL rod bolts, when installing or removing rods.
