I need to do this on my '67. The manual says to remove the inner column from the car. Is it possible to do just the upper bushing with the column still in place? Thanks.

David,
No its not possible in place. You need to undo the nut and bolt at the steering universal joint. (behind rear carb) Then remove the bolt from the universal as removing the steering column is imposible without the bolt removed--it sits in a retaining slot. Once the inner column is removed you should be able to prise the inner plastic bearing out with a pick.

You may want to catch up with Gerry on this board. He has designed and manufactured replacement bushings which are great. If you desire he will install or work an exchange for your steering column.
Gerry's bushes are only for later model MG's... I already checked with him for my '66

Thanks guys. By the way, I did use Gerry's bushing on our '73. Slicker than a whistle. Was hoping the simpler, early column was going to be as easy.
so yank out the column and get one of his and send him the old one for a prototype development
