So there's this big old threaded hole on the rear deck, and I don't know what the heck is supposed to go in there?

How about that paint, eh? Got a reflection of me taking the picture.

Shoulder belt anchors for the late sixties-early seventies models. By the time of your car they stopped using them but it was cheaper to just leave the holes in the stamping and stick a plastic plug in there.

My plugs were very brittle and broke when I removed them; I replaced them with stainless carriage bolts that I polished until they looked like chrome.

Try your local hardware store or McMaster-Carr for plastic finishing plugs. You should find one that will fit and look nearly like the original.

If you want the originals....I think I have some...no plans to put them back in.

Hmm, the 76 that I just picked up has those also but has the plugs in it already. The PO even had the tonneau modified and reinforced with those holes in it. I wondered what that would have been done for.

My '73 has the holes with the original screw in plugs. I've got a couple of old tonneau's that I never use (shrunk). I know at least 1 has holes that align with the plugs.

What do the plug look like? Same as the shock fill plugs but smaller?

On the 69 the shoulder harness clipped on and off of the bolt that was in there. The hole is so that you can put the sholuder harness on with the tonneau cover in place (folded down over the cockpit area, obviously) Those Clip on attachments are not available anymore replacement belts now come with a bolt that has to be unbolted every time yoyu raise or lower the top, install the boot or tonneau cover, a real pain in the ass. I see Moss has saetbelt kit with an eyebolt that fits those holes and the seatbelts click on and off eliminating the above problem. Wish I had bought those first.

Gerry (GEM) made plugs for those holes. Maybe he still has them.

Here's a shot of the original plugs on my 74.

Gerry doesn't have 'em listed on his website, but that doesn't mean he might not still have a couple - or be willing to make some more. He's otherwise occupied this weekend, so he may not see this post for a day or two.
