I am replacing the U-Joints on my '76 B. Old U-joints came out OK with press and tapping. Reasonable amount of effort needed but did not have to go gorilla. After cleaning and rust removal on the bores of the Yoke/Sleeve (splined joint on tranny end) with a Dremel E-Z Lock fine abrasive flap wheel, the new U-joint has a slip fit in the Yoke/Sleeve. When properly aligned, new cup will slide in. Didn't detect any slop. The other pieces (drive shaft, yoke/flanges) seem to have a press fit. I have not assembled yet as parts are etch/primed and are ready for prime and paint. My questions:
1. Is anything less than a light press/press fit of U-joint into flanges going to cause troubles? Vibration? Wear? Failure?
2. Should I just replace Yoke/Sleeve with new?
3. All mating pieces were marked prior to disassembly. Would introducing new part(s) couse issues with balance?
4. If Yoke/Sleeve is serviceable, should I assemble U-joint to yoke with green Loctite?

Thanks for your replies!
Paul

As long as it's not actually loose, it should work out all right. The Loctite can't hurt. Mixing various components, from different driveshafts, can introduce problems with balance, since they are balanced as a complete assembly. RAY

If you've removed your yoke then this is the time to observe Dick's phase advice. I'm told taking the propshaft apart even to put in new universals you should get it rebalanced (liken it to getting new tyres) - not everyone here agrees with the advice I've been given.

I'd be a bit concerned about push fit UJ cups. There is the chance of them rotating leading to the yoke wearing rendering it useless. I have a prop/yoke removed from my new RS which is scrap because of it.
I'd recommend both loctite and using a dot punch on the inside of the yoke to raise a few high spots which will provide a slightly tighter fit. You might even think about grinding a couple of flats on the outside of the cup the drilling and tapping the yoke for grub screws.

I can see the argument but personally I've never had a prop rebalanced after a straightforward UJ job (MGB and other cars) nor experienced any noticeable problems because of it.

Ernie, the only reason I mentioned re-balancing was because he was talking about mixing components from two different driveshafts. This would introduce balancing into the equation. RAY
