Hi All,

Earlier today I read a thread about changing the rear end oil, so tonight I changed mind. I used mobil 1 20w50. Later after I changed it i read some more posts and it seems that I screwed up and should have used gear lube. Since I only drove 8 miles home I don't think I hurt anything. What should you use in the rear?????????

Cheers,
Larry

I doubt you did any damage in 8 miles, but change it again and put in 90w hypoid gear oil. I don't know if you should flush it out with anything or not, but somebody will tell us.

Larry,

You will be fine but replace it with 90 wt. gear oil as Don suggests or one close to that specification.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob,

Are they Dayton bolt on WW's?

Larry,

No, they are standard Dayton knockoff type wheels. If you look at the bolt on type you should be able to notice that the center hub is larger and of course the obvious wheel nuts. I know the pic of my car is not being shown large enough to see that much detail though.

Some like wires and some do not. I have 2 Bs with wires and 2 without but I do like the look of wires even though there is more to maintain.

Cheers,

Rob

They really look great!

I just ordered a set of bolt on Dayton's for my GT, did not want to change the axels or spend the extra money for real knock offs.

Larry,

Thanks for the compliment. I am sure will be happy with your new wheels and they will look great too.

Cheers,

I doubt you would have hurt anything since the gears never really got the oil hot enough to thin it down too much. Plus, all the detergents in the motor oil probably helped to clean it out (might be a stretch). I put 85w90 hyploid gear oil in my rear end. I think you will be alright with just draining and adding the oil. The 20w50 words in the gearboxes (although some like straight 30 wt for the OD models). You may want to tip the car side to side to get all the oil out of the axle tubes on each side too.
