Here's a picture of how I approached a snapped off stud and nut that attaches the rebound strap to the axle. Is this the way others have done this job?

I ground mine to the end of the stud and drilled and tapped a 1/4"-20 hole. Stuck a 1/2" bolt in there with a fender washer and it's good as new.
Your way looks like a good idea too. I'm assuming your going to put a fender washer and a cotter pin in? Probably would have been a lot easier if I had done that.
The factory way was stupid.
I plan to put a fender washer up to the rebound strap (from Strapping Lad) and put a cotter pin through the hole. I'll put washers to fill the space between the cotter pin and the fender washer. Does anyone know what the diameter of the hole should be for the fender washer to fit on the stud?
the stud is probably 1/2" to 5/8". My suggestion is to use rubber washers between any metal and that strap to fill the space. I bought the rubber straps, and can see a bit of wear already, but don't have the room for washers.
I did the same fix on mine, drilled the hole (albeit smaller diameter than yours), fender washer, and split pin. I don't know what size the washer was, I had a stainless one in the parts box that happened to fit perfectly. Works great.
Aw Rusty, you've got lots of customers out here! I put your one inch lowered rebound straps on my GT a couple of weeks ago and they're the cat's ass! :D
