Some of you may find these old photos interesting. Theypre all captioned and have a short text to explain them. The second picture is a shot of the operational part of Leeward Point, Guntanamo Bay, Cuba where I was stationed for 3 years.

Damn man, I miss the cattle cars,....."How many more can you fit on there",....."one more",......"Now how many more can you fit on there",...."one more",...and on and on and on.
Even if you had a big load them old cattle cars would jar your teeth out. Always best to ride standing up.
John, what did the GITMO crew do for weekend liberty? Did you interact at all with the locals?

'Cause sometimes, big things fall out of the sky,....duh;)
Shit happens. The pictures are captioned to tell their stories.
The only time we interacted with the locals, other than talking to Cubans who worked on the base was when sombody could sneak some whores through the fence. We could catch a ride on a ship or fly that old R4D down to Jamaca, Port Au Prince, or The Domininion Republic, occasionaly on weekends. Everybody knew sombody who could hook them up quick in any port. Some had "rent-a-wives" all over the place they visited every time they went somewhere except Florida. This wasn't like pay as you go but more like a romantic relationship with a self sufficient woman. Just let them know what weekend you'd be there and that weekend was yours and yours alone. Just be nice to them with dining out, a gift of nice cloths, just little things like that. Down in the islands when a cab driver asked if you wanted a blond he wasn't talking about hair color, he meant skin tone. Ships company had Cinderella liberty and had to be back aboard every night by midnight. Our squadren guys were given weekend "basket" leave, got off the ship friday nights and didn't have to be back until Sunday night. Since we were on leave the blackshoes couldn't assign any shipboard shit details to us enroute and those two things reall burned their asses up. It was called basket leave because when done with the leave papers went into the waste basket and no time was noted on our leave records.
Brought back good memories. The submarine I was on made any number of trips to Gitmo for operations between 1954 and 1960 before the squadron was transfered from Key West to Charleston.

Hi, John:
I remember Leeward Point quite well - was in Gitmo twice back in the early 60s while attached to VS squadrons on the USS Wasp and USS Essex. That picture of Leeward looks just the way I remember it from the back seat of a Grumman S-2F. While on the Essex in late 62, we were part of the Cuban Missile Blockade. I well remember "Hatuey" beer, too! :eyeroll:
Enjoyed all the photos.
looking at some of the pics you have posted tells me why the navy has us now doing so many things different (think safety). But it looks like you had as much fun as we do now.
Go look at togetherweservednavy.com to look out old shipmates.
