Is there some trick to getting the oil cooler lines off the oil cooler? They are recessed in such a way that it is impossible to get a wrench on them.

Remove the cooler with the lines attached. Easiest to do on the bench. It still may not want to come appart. Heat and cool is the only way that I have found. One never did come appart.
Best to replace the cooler and lines if the engine has been done. Years of junk will be waitng in that cooler, just waiting to have some fun in a new engine.
No Trick just make sure u use 2 wrenchs or u will have to replace oil cooler.
My lines wouldn't budge so I left them on for now and will replace the whole unit sometime later in life.
By the way, getting the oil cooler lines though new rubber gaskets in the rad support is a BITCH!!! At least it was for me...
The trick to getting the fittings thru the rubber gaskets, take a razor and slice thru the gasket making it real ez to put over the hose. Then when you are final fitting it all, use plain ole plastic cement (model airplane glue) on the seam as you replace the rubber grommetts. Take your time, keep the seam on the bottom, and it will never be seen, never come apart, and save about 2 hours, your sanity and a half bottle of Vaseline.
Have fun
I got my oil cooler lines through the okay. I soaked the rubber grommets in hot (almost boiling) water for a few minutes and they really softened up. Then I popped them in the radiator support and shoved the oil cooler lines through quick. It still took quite a shove, but they went through without too much trouble.
I soaked mine in hot water but still had to say some very bad words to get them through. I'm going to use Harry's method if I have to do it again!

Have fun
