I want to strip the paint off the front bumper of the GT as I am going to leave them black when I finish the car off. I already have picked up a really nice rear bumper; still haven't decided on a coloUr but pretty close.
I have been using the spray can Aircraft Stripper on the body and the stuff works great. Would the same stuff damage the rubber under the red paint if I use it for this purpose?
The bumper is in great condition so I see no need to replace it.

Thanks

Paul

Why not experiment on the "bad" rear bumper?

Couldn't you just paint over the red with black? Not sure what's involved in this job, but that seems like an easy answer

It looks like the paint is in very good condition and tight. I think I would use sand paper starting with 220 wet and dry and going up to about 400. I would think that would be a better surface for the new black bumper paint. After the bumper paint is applied then do the sanding with 1000 grit and it should look like new.

If you have access to a "Media Blaster" that should do the trick. It shoots out very small plastic media at lowish pressure and blasts the paint right off with out damaging the aluminium surface underneath. It is used in the aircraft industry and more specifically the aircraft engine overhaul shops.

I think that the stripper will damage the plastic. Not sure though. It will destroy certain types of rubber, for example nitrile and tire rubber, but not all plastics.

I would not use a media blaster as the plastic is softer than the paint.

Careful sanding sounds like the way to go.

If I was going to do that Shawn, I would have scrapped it three years ago. Only reason I saved it is because it is a RBGT.
Besides.. I already have a chrome bumper B. :)

That would have been a perfect idea Derek but that hunk of rust got tossed last summer.

How about on a hidden part on the back or bottom to see if the stripper attacks the plastic?

Check with the local parts store/ paint supplier. There is a special paint remover for uretane bumper covers that doesn't swell the plastic. The media blasting sugestion was good also. I have had some success with sandblasting the paint off of uretane bumper facias that needed refinishing and had already been repainted previously. Haveing said that, no matter how you get the red off I think you will have to repaint it black to get a decent appearance. There was probably some sanding done to prep for the red paint and that will be hard to undo. Possible but easier to just repaint flat black. Problem with just painting over the red would be that any stone chips would reveal the red quite obviously.

Or, just find someone who has done the CB conversion & get another stock one.

You might want to review this:

John is our local guru here in StL and I saw the end result which was great. I also know Mike "the Wiz" and Stef did this and again the results were very good.

I would go with a media blaster.... I've seen a good shop (using walnut shell) literally take the printing off a pack of cigarettes without damaging the underlying paper..same with the printing off a coke can........
That way? you can be assured of not damaging the underlying bumper

I always liked the look of your GT with the "Red Bumpers."

(just my 2 cents)

Me too Brian, but with the coloUr's I am considering, I think the black will offset much better then body coloUr.

Paul

Oh.. Got the package today. Very fast.. Thanks. It goes on tomorrow.

What colours are in the running for the GT?

Janel's picking it for me. :D

Actually, I am leaning toward a shade of medium gray or some earth tone coloUrs. I really liked that Mercedes Gray that another member is putting on his roadster. That looks classy.

Anything but red again.
