I know this has been discussed before, I am thinking of removing my center muffler and replacing it with a straight pipe, So what size pipe will I need? bend specs, etc.. A sound clip or pictures would be nice...:)

You CAN do it yourself, but if you don't have welding skills or equipment I think you would be ahead of the game to take the car to a NON -Rip-Off exhaust shop and have them cut the muffler out. Replace it with the same size pipe that is already on the car and HAVE THE JOINTS WELDED, not clamped.

Make sure that you have the steady rod that comes off of the lower two bolts at the bottom of the bell housing, and use the stock hanger directly under the driver and at the rear of the rear muffler. Trying to rig some other kind of hanger in order to save a few bucks on parts and labor is going to ruin the situation.

You are right on the money, Jack, too many new exhaust systems have been put to waste by tossing the OE hangers and using those POS "universal" ones that let the system wobble around and crack the pipes where they join the mufflers. You may want to keep your old muffler in case you change your mind or to hold something down on a shelf for the next 15 years!

Just FYI. I just went to a local muffler shop and they charged 60 bucks to do it. You will notice a difference, but it is not huge.

As above. I just got a local guy to do it.
No noticable improvement in power but sounded better and one less muffler to rust out!!

1-3/4" is the stock pipe size. IIRC, no bends needed if just replacing the muffler.

When i removed my centre muffler, i took the centre piece to a local muffler shop and they made me one with correct curves and length. Cost me $20, and i installed it using clamps and some muffler cement. I know Jack, no the ideal way, and welding is better and in hindsight i may have dome that. But it has held up perfectly over the last 5 years. Oh, and i kept the original hangars etc

I removed the center muffler from my 77B. Had the local shop bend up and weld-in a plain pipe. $70

It made surprisingly little difference in the exhaust sound. It basically went from 'silent' to 'very quiet'. :eyeroll:, but it did clean up the exhaust system some and gave me a bit more ground clearance.

Cheers,

When I put our 73 B back on the road I put in a Falcon stainless system. I ruined the front muffler on a speed bump and had it replaced for about $60.00 by a local muffler shop. Over time the system got annoyingly louder. I ended up putting a glass pack where the front had been to quieten it down some.
