Exclusive: Paul Tops $5 Mil For Quarter

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, an anti-war libertarian making his second run at the White House, will report having raised $5.08 million in the third quarter. The number, which rivals those of John McCain and Bill Richardson, was boosted thanks to last-minute online fundraising that brought in more than $1.2 million in the last week of the quarter alone.

Paul has drawn himself in sharp contrast with the rest of the field, often engaging in loud exchanges with fellow candidates over his vehement opposition to the war in Iraq. His campaign has been marked by frugal spending and a surprisingly strong online fan base; he routinely wins online straw polls after debates.

This is the second quarter in a row Paul has shown fundraising strength. Last quarter he reported having more cash on hand than McCain, a sidebar that contributed to stories of McCain's collapse.

Whether Paul will be a major factor in the GOP nominating contests remains to be seen, but his money totals - it is likely he will have outraised several second-tier Republicans and Democrats combined - mean he will be in for the long haul. Paul's campaign announced they will begin running television spots earlier this week.

I know that Ron Paul's political impotence has been much ballyhooed, but I think this is further evidence that change might be in the wind?

Election cash can't be written off as spamming, as much as some of the mainstream media types wish it could be.

What are your rules for fundraising down there Zack? Can an individual or corporation contribute unlimited monies to one candidate? Up here there is a limit to prevent fraudulent money transfers. That seems like an awful lot of money raised.

Paul

I'll start off with the fact that I know nothing about politics and don't care to know anything about politics.

However, I'm figuring that the person that raises the most money for his campaign wins, right? So maybe 'the people' should make him take all that money he raised for his campaign and use it to run the country. Whatever is left after his term, he gets to keep.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of course.

Paul -

The Democratic party frontrunner, Hillary Clinton, raised 20 million in the same timeframe.

$5M is a drop in the bucket, but it is by far a much bigger drop than anyone had come close to expecting. Reuters is now calling him the "dark horse" candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.

Dr. Paul also refuses to accept corporate donations and matching funds from the government, so all his fundraising is strictly based from citizens.

The person who raises the most money owes the most political favors and is least likely to follow the campaign promises made before the election. It's all a crooked game that we have no control over. Hillary will be the next President

I'll stay out of this one. Except to say what a ray of sunshine she'll be after the preceding 8 years of darkness.

That's right...she wants to give $5K for each newborn if elected......WooHooo!!!!!

I'll bet Bill can't wait to add that to the list of things we can all do to help the country :)

Rusty, you better get used to it. With more and more people expecting to exist at someone else's expense every year candidates see the need to appease these people to get elected. The days of personal responsibility will be history to be replaced with the days of the government catering to the "have nots" at the expense of the "haves". What's that called-welth reassignment?"

Rusty... based on your observation, there are only 2 people who could stand in her way...

John Elway, and Mr. Ed :D

I wouldn't mind seeing a woman president or a Libertarian president in my lifetime. Somehow I have the feeling it would still be business as usual.

It seems unlikely that *either* party would support a Libertarian...unless they were desperate.

As far as the $5000 baby bond, wouldn't it be better if people had the sense to be able to *post* a bond before having a child. Never will happen though, I know.

A woman for President eh? Not a bad idea......

Oh Ann???? Ann Coulter? Where are you? :)

Just kidding......I am sure Mr Stevens rolled his eyes.....

I consider myself a moderate, and if I had to choose between Billary and Ann Coultergeist, I might very well be the first person charged with trying to be an illegal American immigrant in Mexico.

Ole'!!!

I could agree more Gerry. Sounds a little socialist, or even communist?

Being a college student I see hand outs all the time for other students who think they've earned some right to not have to work hard for grades, pay tuition, and the like. I cant wait until they get done with school and cant get job because they know absolutely nothing about what they did the last 4 or 5 years of their life.
