Right now the Rostyles on my 73B all have various dry rotted 185/70/R14 tires that are of 4 different brands and 4 different sizes. Seriously. The car looks like a gasser drag car, even though all the tires claim to be the same size.

Anyhow, I'm not a big fan of 70 profile tires and was thinking that 185/65/R14 would be a good fit. As well there seems to be a much larger selection of 65 tires as opposed to 70 series, which all seem to be crappy knockoffs made for Honda Civics.

Also since I live in the south and have no plans to drive in any snow on the odd chance that it ever does snow here, I was thinking summer tires might be the way to go. I don't plan on putting a ton of miles on the car and am more concerned with tire performance than originality.

Opinions?

I'm running 195 60 14's...a little lower profile but I like the look.

If you're sticking with "summer" tires only, you have some pretty decent choices. And you'll get a lot of opinions. :)

One thing that may help once you narrow it down is this: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html. If you find yourself constrained by sizes, this little tool could help you stay in the right range in terms of width and profile.

Not on a Rostyle. And the pictures don't really show much!

had a terrible time getting them to seal my rostyles are so rusted on the sealing surface , not to mention these tires call for a 5.5 min width.. took two cans of goop instead of the usual one ..
my word , rice burner tyres on english iron ..
of course i guess its just a matter of labeling.. evidently us and Uk dont own nuttn no more.. we are redundant..

If you want to spend the money to move up to an ultra high performance. I have Yokahama AVS ES 100s on mine. Mine Are 195/60/15 but they are available in 185/60/14. Softer compound than the Sumitomo so stickier but probably not wear as long. Go to Tirerack.com punch in 185/60/14 and they will be at the top. I've read a lot of the reviews. Seems the BMW and Audi crowd hate em but the Miata guys love em. Most of the complaints are noise. I haven't noticed that with mine yet but hey, it ain't no Beemer either. They stick better than any tire I've tried. Good street tire that works decent for autocross & track days if like me, you can't afford two sets of rims & tires.

Going to the tire rack is a good way to see what is out there with reviews and pictures I have the HTR200's as the summer tires on my GT.

I've been on Tire Rack all day looking at tires. ;)

Local guys are charging a lot for crap tires. I might go for buying the tires on tirerack and sending them to one of their recommended installers.

I know what you mean Scott. More you read the more confusing it gets. Depends on the tire dealer I suppose. When I got my Yokos, I went to my local guy & told him what I wanted. He had no problem with ordering them & had them in a couple days. By the time I would have paid shipping + mount & balance, his price was close enough that I didn't mind paying the few bucks extra to avoid the hassle of taking them to the closest installer. Not saying it would work with your dealers but doesn't hurt to ask. Fact that I have been buying tires from him for over ten years may have a little to do with it also.

The original size was larger than 185/65x14 and smaller than 185/70x14. So, the speedometer error is about the same with either (and probably less than the accuracy of the gauge).

There is a much better selection of performance tires for 65 series. I am running 185/65x14 Pirelli P6000 (on 6" rims). I think they may have discontinued the 185 size, but give Tirerack a call and see.

I really like my P6000s!

Are the stock 14" rostyles 5" or 6"? (for the roadster)

Have a look at Nokian 175/75 R14

Originally your car (Roadster) was likely fitted was Dunlop SP68 155-14 SR (Clausager)

As I recall, the factory made the changeover to 165 on roadsters between the 72/73 year. The GT's had the 165 from much earlier.

Scott, "pressed disc" rostyle = 5" width

Yeah - and the wires were 4.5"!

You might well think about getting a set of minilites. I'm running the 6" but most people use the 5.5".

I have some 14x6.5" Minilites. Don't know if I want to use them though.
