The bolts that attach the rotors to the hubs are different than any other bolt on the car, there are grooves cut into the head of the bolt suggesting that these should be safety wired but there are no holes drilled for that purpose. Anyone know why these bolt heads are configured this way? I have attached a pic.

They ARE a special bolt, and "should" be replaced with new each time....

.... and it's real hard to get a socket on them.... but you know that by now.

I thought that was just a Grade 8 head stamp on the bolts. I've got steel wheels so mine are possibly different, at least they are recessed in the hub, but I had no problem getting a socket on them or getting them out, just needed a half-inch drive breaker bar. What is different about them from a Grade 8? I'm not questioning your knowledge, just want to know. I mentioned in another thread that I thought I had ordered two sets of 4 but instead ordered two bolts, so I need to get more anyway, I had planned to replace all hardware in the brakes already.

The markings are consistant with the intent of the ASTM for Grade 8 (six radial lines) but I'm not POSITIVE that the six radial lines can be, er, nearly trenches!

I've not seen anything safety wired on an MG street car except the cover bolts on the OD transmission.

Thanks for your input on this. I'm going to replace the older existing bolts with grade 8 new bolts and use thread locker.

Sorry to hijack your thread sir..
The four bolts in the pic.. is that the only thing that I need to remove the Hub/splines, to get at the rotors? And how do I remove the grease cap? Does it just pull out?

Hi Dave,

you will have to pull the hub in order to get the rotor off

yes, the cap just pulls off, then the cotter pin and nut removed, then the hub pull off

I was told by Paul Asgeirsson years ago that these are called 'place bolts' and should not be replaced by regular bolts. They are self-locking and resist loosening due to repeated heat-cycling. Pretty much what Peter said above!

Paul A was a wise man. You'll never go wrong using his advise.
