Took the front rubber bumper off while getting ready to paint and gotta say I was amazed at how heavy it was and how relatively stock the sheet metal, etc was beneath it.

So, while I've never been bothered by the rubber bumper "look", ( I actually kind of like the way it flows into the body lines of the car) I'm now planning to do away with it and will ultimately do a chrome bumper conversion. (Next winter)

In the mean time I'm looking at front valances...my car had a fairly nice front spoiler when I got it...So I'm thinking of how I could handle the whole issue.

There is a member here on the forum that has a blue B with large driving lights installed and I like the look of that. Also the spoiler listed as the "Special tuning" in the Moss catalog looks interesting...

I'd appreciate any thought and pics of what you all have done.

Thanks.

I've thought a few times about getting rid of the ones on my car, but have finally decided to stick with, to keep it "original". Especially now that I've seen how nicely some have come up once restored - Swamperca's come immediately to mind.

The Mitsubishi emblem shaped indent in my back bumper is more than enough incentive for me to keep mine.

I like mine original, however if I were to change my front and remove the RB I would install some bars like found on the front of a Cobra. One of the members on the board has done it, I saw it the other day on his thread but can't remember who is was but I thought it would be easy to do. Make up plates to match the square RB mounts and them weld up a rectangle piece about 2-3" straight out from that then the nerf bar vertically 9" tall or so about 1 1/4 diameter, maybe a little curve to the bottom of the bar. Actually thinking that there could be a small market for these.

Then you could modify a pre-RB grill and not have to change anything that would prevent going back to the RB. Also fab up something simple to cover up the valance bolt, wouldn't think it should be to tuff but could consume a lot of time.

I think this is the car I was thinking about. It was blue, the air dam was painted black and it had large driving lights mounted. I remember he had the small tubular bumpers as well.

But! Having seen your front end I think I'm flipping back that way. As I said above, I was never against the RB, and I do value originality...something to think about while I'm grinding away in the garage.

I'm open...Thanks Gentlemen.

Our "British V8" crowd have shown all sorts of innovative approaches to losing the rubber bumpers... Just yesterday I added this beautiful '74.5 to our photo gallery: http://www.britishv8.org/MG/HenryByrd.htm

Notice how the bumper bolts have been welded-in and ground flush before the bumper was painted body color. (Of course, it could have been re-chromed instead.)

I do think the contrasting colors due make the bumpers look good or bad. Your car is white and I think the black bumper looks very good on it. I would keep the RB.

Here is one with the bumper removed and nerf bars in its place. I"m kind of leaning this way with my bumper removal.
