Hers a couple of thoughts for my Australian brothers (and any other Brits reading this)
1) After we beat the Wallabies in the quarters we would meet the Kiwis. As Yogi would say 'Its dejaq vue all over again'
2) France has to play - and presumably lose:) their quarter final game outside France.
3) Either Argentina or Scotland will play in the semifinals.

Ummm, I seem to recall the Welsh team saying the same thing just recently !

Whoever wins it is always good to see a great game.

For the non Rugby readers out there an important difference should be noted at this point:

Hooligans play soccer ; gentlemen play Rugby.

Pete.

Woke up too late on Saturday, and thankfully missed Wales getting beat by Fiji. (FIJI!! I mean really!)

That might be, but REAL men play League or AFL, not thugby.

Well Eric we have beaten you 2 out of the last 3 cups. The year I was referring to was 1995 when we beat you in the quarters and then got destroyed by Jonah Lomu (?) in the semis. Of course we will not mention 2003:)
As for Andrew cannot believe you are a KIwi where I thought rugby was king. Granted AFL is tough but you want to see a brutal game then have a gander at Gaelic Football.

Gaelic Football? Pansies! :)

They cancelled the "International Rules" matches between Australia and Ireland because they accused the Australians of being too rough.

The "International Rules" games were a mixture of Gaelic and Australian Rules football.

Love it
I remember watching in '95 in a sports bar in new york The place was about 50/50 Poms and Aussies. I took place around 10 am New york time - a bit ealry for downing pints but well worth it.
2003 was in a bar with a local rugby club here with very few Brits or Aussies for that matter - still a good time though.

Didn't you know that we had to let the mother country win, or that threatened to send Prince Charles, The Queen AND Tony Balir over to Australia.

Australians maybe tough, but even we can only take so much...

Good to see someone maintaining an interest in ancient history !

Just personally I believe a Wallaby can outrun a Kiwi , out leap a Springbok and out smart a Griffin.

Blue roosters in tricolouer shorts...bbbwwwwaahhhhaaaaahhhhaaaa !

Come on people let's be serious here.

Great game. Pleased with the result of course, but was a really good close match to watch. Shame it didn't take place later in the tournament.

its "deja Vue all over again" (A very memorable saying in U.S. sports) As I sadi before once we beat the Wallabies we have to face the Kiwis aGAIN. Lets hope the result is better than it was in 1995.
Any way I think the Kiwis are doomed. Playing the quater final in grey shirts? supposedly they could not wear what they wanted cos of the TV audience???
Perhaps someone could enlighten me where this vast audience is that is watching rugby on Black and White sets?

Well I have to admit it was a great game and no other way to put it...England outplayed Australia on the day.
No excuses , no blame , no if's , but's or maybe's. No question we lost to a better side.

Well done England. I hope they go all the way and take the cup.

Cheers , Pete.

I hate to see a match decided by penalties (and some that were purely at the discretion of the referee). Some of those scrum penalties were suss.

Well We ( Kiwis ) lost to France 20-18. Good job, I say!!!!

Peter, down here rugby IS thought of before your own mother's funeral. It is rammed down your throat day in and day out, and I get sick to death of it.. They send a camera crew to film 5 minutes of coverage of some provincial ( local state to you ) team's practice, but can't even tell you who won the New Zealand Grand Prix on the same weekend!!! Let alone televise it!! According to the New Zealand Herald today ( the biggest National paper ) the most important event that happened in the whole world over the weekend was the All Blacks lost. Boo Hoo. The first 4 pages are solely rugby. What a joke. It also take up just about the whole sports section.

The campaign cost $50 million NZD, apparently they took 45 t of excess baggage!! That happens when you take your own scrum machines. There are 5 coaches, and more hanger's-on'ers than you can poke a stick at, phyios, masseuers, pychiatrists, nutricianists, chefs, water boys, assistant pychiatrists, doctors, lawyers, in fact every man and his god damn dog! If you think you've seen excess, you haven't seen anything until you see this lot!

They build themselves up and the greatest team in the history of the universe, they sell little figurines at the gas station, flags to fly from you car window / roof racks, they have "black-out" days at work where the whole country is suposed to where black clothes on the day they are playing etc etc - what a crock of sh#t!! I've said it before, and I'll say it again - when it comes to the crunch, the big tournament, the one that matters, they always crap out. You should have seen the losers ( supporters ) on the news - it's the worst day of my life, it wasn't their fault ( well they were the ones on the park ), the Ref was against them. For crying out loud, the All Blacks had 76% of the ball posesion, and they still lost?!?

Now we will have to go through months of post mortems and such crap, but basically, I couldn't give a crap, and the only shame is I didn't put $100 on France, who were paying $7 for the win!

Every one else in NZ has to struggle like hell to achieve at their sport with no help from sponsors, government etc, and we have lots of world champions and people at the top of their game in true world-wide sports, yet money keeps getting poured into rugby, and they never perform, and on the world stage, rugby doesn't rate.

That's my rant over for now

Andrew,

Yeah I understand what you are saying.

We are inundated with something similar here during the Australian Football League AFL grand final.

The sad fact about AFL is outside Australia most people don't know about and don't care either.
One day this will probably dawn on the supporters but it won't be any time soon.

Cheers , Pete.

What's the difference between the All Blacks and God?

God doesn't thinks He's an All Black

What's the difference between an arsonist and the All Blacks?

An arsonist doesn't waste 5 matches.

I guess you wouldn't have seen the result of the TRANS-TASMAN CUP match between Australia and New Zealand??

58 - 0

Yes, Australia won.

Maybe we should just stay in this part of the world. We do well here :)

South Africa are one of the front runners for the cup after the latest round.

Should be a good final game.

Cheers , Pete.

Well it is all over.

South Africa came out the victors over England.
Congratulations to the Springboks.

It was telecast here at 4.00 AM so I have yet to see the game highlights but I understand there were no tries scored and the points were from field goals.

It seems to me a change of rules is about due to liven the game up a little.
Maybe reduce the pints for field goals and increase for tries?

Just a thought.

Cheers , Pete

yah it was a pretty slow game, more like soccer than rugby.
don't know about the rule change idea, it would only really make a difference at the professional level because there the only ones who really kick that much, but yes something needs to be done.

Sprinboks now match Australia as only countries to win the Cup twice.

It was a pleasing result (well, as pleasing as it could be).

Oct 21, 2007 02:29:47

shame about the outcome, but was a fair result. SA took all the points on offer from the penalties, while England were going for the tries but only came close once.
England just gave too many stupid penalties away.
