Seems with the days getting shorter every night one of these monsters gets behind me as soon as it starts to get dark. At a light I got out and asked the driver of one of these super bright monsters to either pass me or drive back a fit further so that his low beams were not illuminating the back of my head and bleaching out my eye balls.
All he said was "I ain't tailgating you". I leaned into his open driver’s window, got right close to his face and told him that the spots he was creating in front of my eye could cause an accidental death that was avoidable. For some reason he looked real pale, but he did drive further back.
What I want for winter driving is a review mirror that has a sight on it so that I can reflect all this excess energy back at its rightful owner's face. Perhaps one of those bullet proof shields that 007 has on his Aston Martin. One with focusable chrome platting on it. The ultimate MGB chrome bling bling with a use!!!!!!!

Old style driving light, mounted backwards.
I tend to brake randomly, and slow down a lot when people tailgate. They stop
quickly. or end up taking 10 minutes extra to get to their destination.
Tailgating is one of my pet peeves! I slam on the brakes untill they almost rear end me and then take off. Juvenille, yes, but I like it!
This guy wasn't tailgating.
He was simply too close because on his low beams were blinding me. All he had to do was drive far enough back that my cockpit was above his low beam cut off.
These types see that their lights are in your cockpit but do not have the common sense to back off and keep them from blinding you.
They think that it is OK to keep a car length for every 20 MPH. During the day this is plenty safe. At night with these high powered low beams it is very dangerous.
I have a couple ideas I have thought of.
Rearward facing high beams on my rear bumper.
Water nozzles on my rear bumper.
I'm with you Jim. Although, as many times as I have had those blinding lights illuminating my cockpit, I have had just as many individuals turn OFF their lights when they are behind me at a light, so as to not blind me while we wait for the light to change. You almost want to get out and shake their hand.
We all feel the pain. They are so bright sometimes I cant even see the gauges in front of me. Worse than that are the people who get on your left side and shine the headlights right into the side mirror. Talk about blinding... I usually stick my hand over the mirror until they get the hint and pass me or slow down.
Hey.... I've been noticing these "people" who use these driving lights for the last several years.... at times they can blind you when your approaching them. I've always thought they were insensitive to other drivers on the road and always wondered if they think they same thing and if so why don't they shut em' off! This problem isn't as noticeable if your in a truck or SUV... but if your in a low vehicle like LBC's they are definitely an accident waiting to happen. In the past I've flashed my high beams to let them know.... but the most common response is them turning on their high beams.... to prove that they have them off.... what idiots!
Some of the aftermarket lights out now are scary. I had a BMW following me on a deserted stretch one morning before sunlight and I swear, by the time he got within 1/2 mile of me, I was getting more illumination of the road ahead from his lights than from my own!
I hear you Jim. The ones that tick me off are those who always have badly adjusted fog lights turned on - especially when the road is wet. When I have the opportunity I calmly tell them they need to turn on their defogger, since it really isn't foggy outside!
A friend in England had one of those big driving lights mounted on the rear as a reversing light (common rally car practice back in the '70s). He had it wired to a switch on the floor, along with a switch that would turn his brake lights on. If he got a tailgater, he would slow down, turn the brake lights on, followed by the reversing light! Some folks left magnificent skid marks!
I too have done the 'tap on the brake' thing with varied results. I've re-aimed my rear view mirror too mostly with the people behind ignoring it, or not noticing, however I've got a couple of people to back off by doing it. I'll have to make some sort of indicator so I know when it aimed right. :-)
I drive a one ton Dodge Diesel with utility bed for work. Scatch up some gravel at edge of road. Also one ton rear wheel smoke locked up and noise. Usually backthem off. In younger more stupid day. Wasn't thinking. A person was tailgating me real bad on interstate. And we were going above the speedlimit. I tried slowing down and speeding up. He would not get off the bumper. So I seen a semi ahead. So i ran up to the semi then changed lanes. I seen headlights all over the road. He made it. He never tailgated me again. Like said I was young and stupid. Could have got him or more people killed.
How about a Spit with an aircraft landing light mounted as a "back-up light"? I've seen it happen.
Oh boy, that sounds like something that someone would do to me, but not for the same reason! I know those things are bad(the SUV's AND the lights).
