OK, I recently got a brand new Bell Sport helment SA2010, the helmet had two rubber plugs in the appropriate place for the Hans tethers quick release to thread into, but it is not threaded, and the Hans piece threads into the helmet, so how do you go about getting the correct threaded insert for your helmet, I went to the hans site and saw nothing about it.

Perhaps this video will answer your question, Hap.
HANS installation
There are two washer looking pieces with captured nuts that go inside the helmet underneath the padding. My Bell had the holes, but I had to drill the Simpson.
Easy to install, Hap, and good that you got one.

Actually, I just borrowed one for the Mitty B-)
Fred, my new Bell has the holes drilled as well, some of the helmets come threaded already.

Right. I forgot that Santa found you undeserving for calendar year 2011.
One can hope that 2012 will be different, although the reports, and frankly Hap, all appearances, have not been encouraging so far.
You shouldn't need the backing plates then. Glad to hear you found one for the Mitty.
When I installed posts on mine, had to drill helmet and use a washer with a captive nut on inside, under the padding. It was next to impossible to get the wrench onto the nuts....
Okie

Yeah, thats looks to be the deal here as well, bascily, it looks like you cram/force that washer/captive deal under the padding and styrofoam, I tested to see if it could even be done, without tearing the foam all to hell with a small pick, pushing it in to the point where I could see the end of the pick thru the drilled hole, of curse, thats alot thinner than the Hans piece and the Hans tool you need to stick up in there. Looks like a PITA, thought up by a bunch of idiots, looks like this would have been better to just have a threaded insert put in the helment at time of production, and before all the padding and foam went inside the helmet. Dick May has to get a new hlmet this year, per SCCA rules, and he's looking at helmets that already have the threads in them, I know Pyrotech is one of them.
Hap, I added the Hans buttons to my helmet earlier this winter and it wasn't too bad. I was able to use a plastic scraper that I dulled down a bit to gently pry the lining up a bit and guide the nut and washer piece into position using the thin wrench provided in the button kit. In my case my helmet wasn't drilled so I also had to mark and drill the holes. Still only took me about an hour to get it done without any damage to the lining. Just go slow and easy and don't try to pull the lining and padding back any more than absolutely necessary and you should be fine.
This "kid" explains how to do it. Now, if I can just find his video an programming a VCR.
