What oil can be used in the lever shocks when they
get low on fluid AND how do you do it? I recall years
ago that we used to put hydralic jack oil in them, but have
forgotten the particulars... so looking for a recommended
procedure and the correct fluid. Thanks, Doug

Get some 20wt motorcycle fork oil. With the wheel off, as you face the shocks, there's a bolt with the head facing you that you remove, and then fill it there. Fill to the bottom the hole.

Actually, you don't need to take the wheel off, but everything else is correct.

I used castor oil from the Drug Store over 15 years ago (about $2.00 for a jar). No leaks, shocks still working good. Fluid looks clean. The original hydrolic fluid was made from castor oil, mostly synthetic & additives currently used.

I did the fork oil recently and suckered the pharmacy into giving me a nice eye dropper to fill them with :).

The manual calls for mineral oil. A syringe works well.

I think with the 20 wt fork oil, there is one with additives that is supposed to "refresh" all the seal etc. if I am not mistaken.

I used it in my rear shocks as well.

Add the oil very slowly, if you go fast you may end up underfilling. there is a very small hole inside the shock that the oil has to go thru. You can add some ATF to it also, this will swell the seals a little, helping to stop leaks.
