Hoping some of the early car gurus will be able to help me. My car was built at the end of October, '64 right after the change from Jaeger gauges to Smiths. I need the number for the Smiths gauge that was used until March, '65 when they went to the bolt in tank and changed the sender and gauge. Believe at that time they went to Smiths gauge BF 2300/02. Believe that's when they also went to the voltage stabilizer.
When I got the car it had a mismatch of sending unit (early strapped tank 10 gal.) voltage stabilizer and the Smiths gauge mentioned above. Naturally it doesn't function as it should. I have a Jaeger gauge and can eliminate the stabilizer which should work correctly once adjusted, but if possible I would like to go with the correct Smiths Gauge.
Through my research I came up with a gauge # FG 2530/70 but I'm not 100% sure that is correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know of a table or listing for Smiths gauges and their applications?

According to my '65 BMC dealers parts book, the original gauge was BHA 4214. This was superseded by BHA 4318. RAY
I hope this doesn't confuse the issue, but.....the fuel gauge in my '64 (vin no 21743) is a "Jaeger" no. FG2530/63.
Bill, I have the same Jaeger gauge. I'm hoping to find the Smiths gauge that replaced it. Thanks.
Ray, that is the BMC numbers. Do you have the cross reference to the actual gauge number?
Gary, sorry, all I have at hand is the numbers in the factory parts book. RAY

Gary I can't help you but perhaps an email to these folk might elicit an answer - or start the thrill of the chase - they're claiming Smith's parentage.
Unfortunately, no help from either site. The search continues.:(

Gary does this help? First link shows the ARH176 tank then see the comment in 'more' item 14 second link #BHA4381E

From my Smiths parts catalog:
Smiths # - FG2530/63 B/L # - BHA4214 prior to 10/64
Smiths # - BF2300/02 B/L # - BHA4470 after 10/64
Smiths # - BF2226/00 B/L # BHA4736 MKII 72-

Barrie, thanks a lot. That info reaffirms my belief that I need the FG 2530/70. I thought that was correct but could not find a confirmation. Again, thanks. :)-D

Please be careful in that the part numbers I gave were from the Smiths part catalog for cars sold in the USA. Many of the Smiths / British Leyland parts and part numbers for non-USA cars were different. I found this out in the past on some of the parts I have on my 68 USA-spec MGB that differ from the 68 MGBs sold in the UK and even, to some extent, in Canada.

Bob, that is where a lot of my confusion comes from. According to that I should have a BF 2300/02. The problem is the BF 2300/02 is used with the voltage stabilizer and the later style sender unit used in the bolt on gas tank. My car has the strap on tank with the early sending unit. Different resistance values. I have a Jaeger gauge which will work if I eliminate the voltage stabilizer, but there was supposed to be a change to Smiths gauge in Oct. '64. The tank and sending unit was changed in Mar. '65. At that time I believe the BF 2300/02 gauge was used in conjunction with the Stabilizer. I'm going to try and find the FG 2530/70 gauge and check it out. That gauge was used on the Midget I believe. If It works I'll post an update. By the way, the Smiths FG 2530/63 is what I have in the car now. It is a Smiths/Jaeger gauge. It may be that that was what was used until the change in Mar. '65 to the BF 2300/02. As you can tell this is a realy gray area. At least in my feeble mind. Thanks for your help.
