Does anybody know if you need to remove the engine to replace the throwout bearing on a 1973 Mini Cooper.

You don't but it is a total pain in the ass and sometimes takes longer than if you did pull the engine in my experience. Get the Mini up on secure jackstands, undo the motor mount bolts and lower exhaust manifold enough to allow movement of the engine. You might also need to loosen or disconnect the remote shifter. Remove the clutch arm pin on the slave cylinder plunger and as many of the bolts as you can around the clutch housing. You can jack up the engine a little on the clutch side in order to gain access to the bolts. The lower one near the axle is an absolute pain! Be very careful that the radiator doesn't get smashed up against something when you are moving the engine around. I usually duct tape a thick piece of cardboard on it for protection. Once you work the clutch housing off, it is super easy to replace the throwout bearing, just be careful not to damage it by hammering it on or pressing it on by the edge of the bearing. I have a machine shop press them onto the plunger for me.

This is an MG1100 but same setup.
