I've added a text based CAPTCHA ("Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") to the registration page, hopefully that will slow down the spammers. Lately there's been about 5-10 a day registering on the site.
Hopefully the "test" won't put off any real people, I've tried to make it as easy and friendly as possible, including those with visual disabilities. And of course it won't stop spammers if there's a real human doing the registration, just all these fake registrations done by computers.
Wish they would just leave us alone! Not going to happen...

Can you add an (iq) test question instead of a captcha?
Like, where were MGB's made? (abingdon)
What country are MG's from? etc, etc.
The spammers are getting pretty good with their image recognition to get
past captcha's. But their knowledge of english cars is sorely lacking.
Why do Spammer's spam? I've noticed I get a bunch of email that our virus scan catches that has in the subject "MG" or "MGB". What do they have to gain?
Skye good for you for making it hard for them to get on here :)
What about Australian MG's or the new ones built in China....
Thanks Skye for keeping this place running well. We all appreciate it!

Because some numbskull responds, and spam is cheap to send.
it costs a spammer maybe $100 to send a few million emails.
If one in ten thousand respond, and they make $100 for each response Which
is typical for bringing in a mortgage refinance they could make $100,000.
In fact many do.
Similar with enlargements and pornography peddled through spam. If one in ten
thousand or a hundred thousand subscribes, it's worth the 15 minutes the spammer has
spent on it.
So even with a really really low response rate, spam is profitable as long as the effort per spam is very very low.

Absolutely agree with the title of this thread!
Now, when are they going to pay me those lottery winnings they told me I won last week?
I agree, Skye. I used to have a guest book on one of my web sites. But, alas, the spammers and their "bots" quickly found it and, every day, I was having to edit out all the spammers crap. I finally bit the bullet and got rid of the guest book.
Good luck on what you are doing - you have my sympathy!
Skye, just a big "THANKS" to you for your efforts!!

Spammers are the same as telemarketers, thay know that if they call enough people some fool will buy what they are selling.. Spammers do the same thing with less legit intentions and use greed to reel in the fish..
