Anyone out there have a picture they can post of the wiring hook up on the starter?
I want to make sure in my old age that I did it right. I'm a little forgetful at times.

Memory serves me right......

On your 74B the Black wire from the battery, the Two brown wires from the ALT
and the Brown wire from the Ignition Switch go on the top starter post.
The Brown / White wire from your starter relay goes on the lower Starter post.

So, Three Browns and a Black on the top post.
One Brown / White on the bottom post.

The browns and battery cable all should have ring terminals while the white/brown will be a female spade terminal and goes on the only spade down there. If you have a late starter, there would also be a smaller spade that on late cars takes a wire with a green(?) tracer.

I've got three spades on the replacement starter that went out. That's why I asked for a picture. I had ordered a starter from Amazon and it worked for about four days till it hit it's dead spot. Then "That's all Folks" I'm trying to go local on the starters You know NAPA, Advance, ect. But for some reason NAPA can not cross reference the part number. #16164. (It's Saturday, regular crew out) I do like the price NAPA gave me on the remanufacture. $39 bucks plus core charge. Advance is a little higher but they say they can't find one right now. They have to wait till Monday to call.

It sound like the starter motor has the wrong solenoid installed on it. It should only have 2 spade terminals. One to actuate the solenoid and one to provide 12 volts to the coil when starting the car. This was used on all later cars. RAY

So, are you working on the 74? That should only have one spade on the solenoid with all of the brown wires going onto the stud and held down with a nut.

AND that nut is not a plain old 5/16 nut. Don't try to use a regular 5/16 nut (coarse or fine) on there, you'll damage the threads on the stud. Not sure what it is (British Standard???), but keep it separate!

it seems that these are getting hard to find. My local refurb guy literally laughed when I brought one in for repair. Advance was unable to get me one. I ended up at O'Riely's (Georgia). It was not a Lucas that I got back.
