How do I remove my steering wheel. I have a 77 mgb and I want to change my turn signal/horn lever. I think the wheel needs to come off to slip the new lever unit over the shaft. I did a search but couldn't find anything. Thanks

yes, you need to remove the plastic center cover in the steering wheel (where the horn would be in most other cars), remove that nut and then remove the steering wheel. once the wheel is off, you will be able to remove the turn signal switch and the windshield wiper switch, they are attached and become one part.

Good Luck.

Will Dave need a puller for the 77 model wheel?

John Twist has a video on this. Here is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwf2BDC5DMo&feature=channel_page

You'll need a wheel puller. Its available for free loan at most Auto Zone stores if you don't have one.

I borrowed a puller from Auto Zone, but I had to adapt a couple of steel plates to the back as to not ruin the wheel. Even with a lot of pressure on the puller, the wheel would not break free until I gave the nut a good whack with my big brass mallet, and it popped free.

I tried John Twists method. Did not work for me. I bought a wheel puller at pep boys fot $15 and I will try again this weekend.

I took the stupid looking original steering wheel off my '77 and put a period looking wheel on mine to go with having chromed and lowered it.

I had really trouble trying to get the wheel off (did't have a puller) so drilled a small hole near the spine in the wheel to 'release' it (at my mechanic's suggestion) and it was easier after that.

I tried the Twist method too. It doesn't work for these later cars. I ended up buying the very expensive puller ($40) from Moss. It worked great but you also need to supply two of your own 3" "C" clamps to use with it. I will never use it again so if anyone wants it let me know. 1/2 price plus shipping!

Thanks guys, just got home from work and with your direction I got the job done and cleaned up in 20 min. I got lucky with the wheel. It came right off with a couple love taps to the center of the shaft where the nut attaches. The turn signal lever went on easy and I'm done.

I can't believe I didn't see that plastic piece in the center of the wheel that exposed the nut. I thought maybe it was held on from behind with a set screw or something.

Thanks again, Dave
