Thought I would lube and grease everything up before re-installing engine and new OD tranny. I cleaned up the steering rack and found no grease fitting nor any provision for one. This rack appears to have been manufactured without this provision. Was this standard on late model B's (1980)?
Is it necessary to add 90wt. oil to this rack or is it a sealed system that requires no attention?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
Ken

The manual recomends oil. Some have had good sucess with grease.
Are the boots OK? If they are not the oil will just leak out.

as far as I know only the very earliest had fittings.
\
\the book calls for the same stuff used in the rear end. in addition, I smear grease on the rack itself.

Ken,
Use 90 wt. Seems to work fine. If your boots are plyable and not cracked, you can loosen the clamp and gently force a small oil can spout in between the rubber boot and the tie rod. Give it several good squirts. Works for me.
