Firstly... The paint on the inside of the GT comes off nicely. But... What is with the black tar like stuff all over the place? I imagine it is a sealant but they kinda went overboard at the factory. So... regarding this crap.. I am getting it off with lacquer thinner but how did they get the paint to stick to it in the first place?
What should I use when I need to re-seal these spots?

eastwood makes a seam sealer that's paintable. i'm sure you will apply it neater than the factory did. unless you do this for a living one can should last you the rest of your life.

I used mineral spirits, chizzle, and a BFH to get that stuff up. Man, what a pain that was.

Do a search on "mgbjockey floor" (w/o the " ")and you'll find some good stuff. Frank posted some good pictures of his project 18 months or so ago. (wish I had as good a memory for stuff that's really important).

Here's a sample.

Sound deadening.

If it isn't rusty underneath just leave it alone and paint over it.

Clean it reasonably well and then apply dry ice in small say six inch square, sections. Let the stuff freeze and pop most of it off by whacking it lightly with a ball peen hammer, shattering it.

Mine came up the easy way, I replaced the floor boards... :D

Twig, that is a brilliant idea man. I suppose that the safe handling of dry ice would be paramount, but what a labor saving idea.

When I got my car ready to paint I shaved the top layer off the sealer with a razor blade to leave a nice smooth surface than just sprayed right over it.

Can't say as it is my original thought, but I can't remember where I first learned of it either.

That almost sounds like a "Mr. Wizard" tv experiment. He was always doing stuff that no child under the age of 10 should have been doing. "Today we're going to fill this ballon with Helium ..........." I didn't even know what Helium was let alone have my Dad purchase a tank of it so that I could make balloons fly! And then there was the liquid Nitrigen, can you imagine a five year old getting his hands in that stuff? "Look Mom, I can drive nails with this banana" Yeah right. :)

Actually, it isn't the floorboards.. they are done. It is the back part of the inside including around the inner wheel wells. It isn't like the thick stuff that was on the floor, just like a tar spread around the seams, not thick at all.
I was wondering if it was necessary to put it back on before painting.
Thanks

Paul
