I've finished by emission equipment retrofit, including installating a ZS 175 CDST carb with the auto choke. I cleaned the carb and reset the auto choke by boiling the heat mass and marking it. It starts right up when cold, but is very difficult to start when hot. I found this after several test drives, and it happens everytime. After I cleaned the piston and needle, I reset the botton of the needle flat at the bottom of the piston. Should I just turn it to lean it out, or is there a different issue going on?

Greg:
Make sure you have the heat shield installed. The previous owner of my car had removed it. Hot starting was better with it installed, but I was never able to completely cure the hot start issue due to the location of the catalytic converter. That along with a lean condition I was never able to fix forced me to replace my Stromberg with an "alternative".
I'm sure others will chime in with other suggestions.

I don't have a heat shield. I've gathered all the other items I needed to reintall the original emission equipment, but could not find a heat shield. Any other work arounds?
You need some kind of heat shield with the cat right under the carb. I cut and bent an aluminum sheet and riveted on some ceramic fiber Insulation I got from McMaster-Carr. That's worked fine on my '78 for a few years.
Jim,
Thank you. can you send me the size and dimension of it? I try to make one, and try to figure out how to bolt it on.

Greg:
I have the one I pulled off my car. I bought it new from the B-Hive and it is hardly used (less than 100 miles on it). I assume you have the plate mounted between the carb and the manifold? It's #114 in the Moss diagram linked below and your throttle cable should be attached to it. If you do, then this bolts directly to it.
Otherwise you will need it or maybe fab something different to avoid pulling the carb. I have it, but you will need the gaskets and the induction heater (#80 in the Moss diagram - I have one as well!) to space everything properly.

If you pay the postage, I'll send it to you. Send me a private message with your address and I'll pack it up and send it to you this week.
