Hi Guys,
I have a 1977 MGB Roadster which has been converted to chrome. Can anyone please tell me if a tachometer from a chrome bumper model will work correctly in a rubber bumper model. My current tacho does not work properly, i.e. it moves up to 900rpm upon starting the engine but fails to show much higher revs even when the engine is obviously turning much faster and I was considering exchanging this unit with a chrome bumper unit. Cheers for any replies.

It is not as simple as you hope.
There were several different chrome bumper tachometers. Up to about 1971 or 1972 they were current sensing. After that, they became voltage sensing. I think at some point they also changed physical size.
If you make sure you get a voltage sensing tach that is the same physical size as yours, it ought to work, or be made to work quite simply.
Dave.
Although the UK cars kept the large style guages all the way through, there was a major visual change on the late 76 models as part of the interior upgrade. The earlier tachs will fit, but won't match the speedo.

Thanks a lot for the reply guys, at least I know now. I prefer the look of the older tachos but I have just managed to get myself a good used working tacho out of a rubber bumper model so that should be fine. Thanks again. Dave
i just took a porsche 914-4 tach and inserted it into my old '63 MG housing - works perfectly
