Hi all,
What is the best make to buy for a double row timing chain for a 70B. I currently have a Rolon(?) but is there any better?

Of course. There's a German chain that's very good (expensive) and there's a Japanese chain that's really nice (hard to find and expensive) and if you can find an old stock Renold chain, you'll pay a lot but they're excellent. I keep the German chains in stock - no master link. The 2 features to look for in a reliable and well-made chain that you can see visually are the absence of a master link and the rollers on the chain will not have a split in them. After that, it would take a metallurgist to know the difference. Lastly, some people want the shortest chain available (they can vary as much as a quarter of an inch) so that the tensioner does less work. Let me know if I can help. Keith, the best one is the one that doesn't break. And X2 whatever Basil said.

I don't think I ever saw a timing chain break, I'm sure they have with a whole bunch of miles on them, stretch is more of issue, more so with A series engine (same exact timing chain as the MGB) because they have no tensioner. I did import the German made IWIS timing chains for awhile until I realized they stretch more so than the lesser expensive ones and add to that the rivets are oversized and some time interfere with the oil slinger. IWIS (German made) timing chain is what was used in older Mercedes engines, and that was nightmare of a idea and those timing cause world of trouble on those engines if ignored, while at the same time a well taken care of American V8 engine, like SBC, could go a couple hundred thousand miles and not have any real timing chain issues. For MGBs, the AE timing chain has master link, and how you install is more critical, I started using the lesser expensive County timing chains again and see no issues with them. Sometimes trick and more expensive isn't always better.
