Got the timming chain cover off no problem. Nothing obvious as far as where anything is knocking. Two items of suspicion.
I have a later timing cover and balancer on the engine. Did this to re-locate the timing marks. I know that the later oil slinger must be used. Do I have the right one? Why are they matched to the cover?
The sprocket on the crank is inboard 20 thousands from the cam sproket when measured with a straight edge. This would indicate that I need a 20 thou shims behind the crank sprocket I am thinking this should be fixed, but do not see how it can cause a low rpm "knock" that goes away when off idle?
There is a bit of wear in the chain tensioner, but still not what I would call catastrophic.
Not sure where to go from here other than to button it up and keep driving with the knock.

Check the bolts that fasten the"cover" onto the engine behind the timing sprocket on the camshaft. I think there are two of them. I had a strange knocking noise in there once on a previous B, turned out that both bolts had backed theselves out and the bolt heads were knocking against the backside of the sprocket. It was a miracle that one didn't snag in one of the holes in the sprocket and just tear everything up. I tightened them up and everything was fine after that.
