My 1967 B was given a really crummy paint job sometime in the past and there are some bubbles and flaking along some seams. I can see it starting to rust there. It hardly ever rains here, so excess water isn't much of a problem.

I'm sure this is pretty elementary for you guys, but does anyone have any tips on how I can stave off the rust-monster until I can afford to get it a decent repainting? I read on the FAQ about POR-15. If you folks have had good luck with that, I'll try to find some. Also, any idea where I could find touch-up paint?

I actually doubt that it's the original BRG color now. It's the right shade but a sort of metallic luster.

Thanks!

Lew

Spot blast, brush some 2 pak primer, brush some colour over.

If you're not sure about the correct paint code, find an auto paint supply store in your area. Most have a portable device that they can place on a flat surface and (through some magic I'm not familar with) can determine the correct formula for mixing the color.

However in most cases the smallest amount they will mix is a pint, depending on the toners involved this could cost between $30-$50...good luck!

Lewis that is such a tough question. If your paint is a custom mix and was painted a while ago (the sun fades paint dark colors faster than light) it will be hard to match. If it is metal flake it is not stock MG British Leyland and spraying flake is another thing all together. To do it right you would clean the spots to bare metal prime and spot paint. If you have a basecoat clear coat job here is the drill. Sand to bare metal feather edges out to primer. Replace the primer to the same level as the existing primer. Top coat to existing topcoat level then let’s say it’s a door, you clear coat the whole door after you scuff the whole door with 400 grit paper. Hope this helps and this would be the way a shop would do it. And yes it is allot of work but the repair will not be noticeable that way.

Thanks for all the input! I appreciate your expertise.

Actually, I'm not too concerned about the repairs being noticable, as I'm hoping to do a complete new paint job within the year. Right now I just want to stave off any advancement of rust by doing whatever I can to keep it at a minimum in the meantime.

It looks like I'll try to find as close a match as I can for color, sand down the spots, primer and paint over. Hopefully that will keep it from rusting into the ground until it gets it's new coat.

Where exactly is the rust? If it's down in the rockers, you could prime then paint the entire rock black or some other contrasting color. Would look better then miss-matched paint.

Actually the computerized paint matching systems that paint store use will account for any fading tht has occured over time. I have had to touch up several airplanes what were painted....decades ago...not years....and have never had a problem matching colors. I use Carquest paint stores and I only use a Dupont paint.

That sometimes works with a straight color but it does not work well with Metallic’s. It also depends if it’s a custom or stock color even the color of the substrate will effect the color of the topcoat. Spectro color match is not perfect and an experienced jobber will tell you that. Most good painters will further tint paint to get that perfect match. At least that is results that I have gotten.
