Hey Everyone,

I just got an EZ On vinyl top for my '68 B, but don't really have the 4 arms everyone is suggesting are necessary to get it on the header rail myself.

What's the average cost to get one of these installed?

Thanks,
Adam

I was quoted $200 from a couple guys, went with the guy recommended by a number of dealers and my insurance company, one day service-- Really should be a cake walk for a pro with a good top.

Adam, have you joined The San Diego MG Club yet?

Not yet--they don't take membership reg. or payments online, so I'm waiting for Tuesday's meeting.

Believe me, if I can do it myself, ANYONE can.

I pay less than the going rate because of volume. Regular cost is $150 I believe.

hold on, installing a top on an MGB is not hard. I have done two of them and would not hesitate on another. Before you pay someone, think about doing it yourself. It is a matter of getting the folding frame work ready, having your "stuff" ready, and getting to it. If you have it all ready to do, it will take about 30 minutes to finish the job.

Go for it yourself!

Pro who did mine did not seem to break a sweat, he might price lower next guy -- does give a warranty. I think Robbins has a pretty decent warranty on materials as well.

With a little hand holding, am pretty sure I could have done it myself, but, it was a year and I had not gotten "around to it".

Adam, give me a call at 951-219-7199. If you bring it up Sunday, I will help you install it. I think I even have the adhesive for mounting it to the header.

Thanks, everyone. I'm all for trying it myself, as long as it doesn't get messed up.

And thank you, Dave. I'd love the help, but Superbowl Sunday doesn't seem like it's gonna fly, unless you're talking early morn, when it might be too chilly. I'll give a ring soon.

You might want to take the old top off and paint the frame a few days before you install the new top.

Good suggestion, and good opportunity for a top down ride in southern CA... ;)

I was told $275 plus they said they needed to run some straps on the top that would cost extra. (Triumph tops had reinforcng straps, MG tops did not). Another guy said if he didn't supply the top, he wouldn't install it. So far it's not been installed in about 6 years.

I don't see myself waiting 6 days for this, much less years.

But painting the frame is a good idea. Maybe a navy to subtly match the new seatbelts...

I also got an EZ Top for my 64 B and it almost seems to small. Doesn't want to stretch much. The rear cross bar needs to have two flaps of material sewn around it, but even with just putting the bar in the right position, I can't get the side snaps both positioned and the front lamps to close down....so.......riding around with the top looking goofy until I can find a way to get this bar positioned properly. Anyone else had this issue? Bought it from TopsOnline.....good price, good quality, impossible to install. I'm the first to say I may have not done it correctly, so any tips would be greatly appreciated......oh yes.....some installation instructions would probably have helped too!!! Thanks..

I was quoted $275.

And they insisted they had to modify the top to provide some straps even after I showed them there were not supposed to be any.

Didn't get it done. Will wait and do it myself some day.

Here is a good link for our neighbor club up the road. Doesn't look too hard....

John Twist has a video for correctly putting the top down, and the two flaps are glued around a bar, it pulls part of the top down when you are folding it back, but you can go to the source and see what I am talking about. Mine came unglued, and the installer reglued it for me.

There are two straps that go around the top to cinch it up to make it neat after it is folded, mine are long gone.

I am not sure, and if someone jumps in to tell me I would appreciate it, but my top seems tight to the halo on the driver side and the top does not drop entirely below the body when down, am thinking it should, but it would take a lot of forcing to get it to fit down inside the compartment. It binds , is the frame just not properly aligned? The old top wore away the covering there, and I want to recover and would like the top to fit correctly when down without undue force.

Regards, John

That's what I charge now, 125-150 depending on the top material, vynil or stayfast. The vynil isn't too bad but the stayfast can wear you out streaching it for a good fit.

Best advice I can give is to make sure your frame works smoothly and fits correctly before you put the new top on.
