Good to know. I was going to crash the White House state dinner the other night but I couldn't get the tie right.

LMAO -
Waiting for the day I retire and don't have to wear one most work days. Although this job it is probably about 50% of the time still too much.
I always use the Four-in-Hand version.
As my neck's girth has increased, I needed as much of the length of the tie as possible to have a belly-button covering accessory.
:)
Whats a neck tie? I forgot, it's been so long that I wore one.
Used to have to wear one every day for the 40 years I was in the advertising business
and since I retired 20 years ago the only time I wear them is to weddings and funerals.
I seem to be wearing them to too many of the latter events lately.
George Herschell
I prefer the Four-in-Hand, my Grandfather tied a full Windsor every day, my father tied the Half-Windsor until he retired from 25 years in the military..
I like a Windsor myself but used a Four In Hand last time because it had been too long since I had worn my funeral uniform that I had forgotten how to do a Windsor. That last time was to the Catholic wedding of one of my grand nieces where damned near every other guy dressed casual. That goes to show how long since I'd been to a wedding.
OK I admit I'm a 4 in hand man the few times I have ever had to tie a knot (22 years ago when I got married), but I can't tell you how many junior high boys I have taught to tie a tie because our coaches demand that they "dress up" on game days. John where did you find that graphic. You find some of the most amazing things.
The first time I tied a tie on my own (high school), I had instructions very similar to JDW's...and carefully follwowed them as I watched myself in the mirror.
It came out nice.....
.....except....
.....it was backwards/inside out.
:eyeroll:

Same here. I used to have to wear one each day as a manager of a Burger King. Got so I can tie a Windsor with my eyes closed. So, when the kids ask me if I can tie a tie I tell them it's so easy I can do it with my eyes closed and then demonstrate for them.
I'm going to forward this graphic to the coaches. ;)
1/2 and full Windsor for many years then switched to the shell knot. Sort of weird to start with the tie inside out and seams showing but makes a nice knot and saves a bunch of length for us large necked folks (18.5)
I'm still wondering why you guys wear a hanging rope around your neck ;)

Because Corporate America requires it. :(
I was raised as a military brat by Sgt. Starch, I have been tying the windsor since third grade...at age 62 I said no more and I will not attend any event that requires it, just won't do it.
Four-in-hand, every day of my working life until I retired 6 years ago...and all through grade school, too. It works well if you're tall... no need for extra long ties this way.
Half Windsor my whole life in the North. Only on rare occasions in Florida. My whole advertising career in Florida from 1976 to 2006 I got away with "polo" shirts "Golf" shirts, khaki pants, khaki shorts, no socks.
Now for the greatest mystery of all: how the Hell do you tie a Bow tie? (No clip ons allowed). My Father must have shown me how to do that 50,000 times, but it never sank in.
I agree with Naomi. I must have been a horse theif in a previous life. I will not wear a noose around my neck. If a tie is required, I use a clip-on tie. The do look okay now. Much better than the early ones.
Steve
I have a clip-on bowtie that was my dad's.
I rarely wear it.
:D
Tying a bow tie is easy, even though it may look confusing in this diagram:
http://www.how-to-tie-a-tie.org/bowtie.html
There are certain jobs where a clip on - either regular tie or bow tie - is just not acceptable. And yes, it's easy to tell, even if you have a "good" clip-on.
And please - a bow tie with a tux ONLY...unless of course you wear it with the right accesories...like a big red nose and large floppy shoes...

Nah....our good (and late) Senator Paul Simon of Illinois looked pretty spiffy in his suit and bowtie!

The thought makes me cringe...
Hard telling where I found that thing, one reason I posted it here is so I could find it again.
