Well, as mentioned, I did not find any smokking guns inside the timing chain cover. The only thing that was out of spec was a 20 thou misalignment between the two timing sprockets. The shim I found at a buddies was only 10 thou thick. Decided to put her back together with that and the ressult is that the noise is GONE!!!!

Wish I knew why? I can not believe 10 thou would be enough to emulate a rod knock?

Think of it this way too Peter, that the block in escence acts like a big cast iron 'drum' of sorts so any and all noises (good and bad) are amplified. Much like tapping your fingers on a empty carboard box. Your timing chain may have one link that has a bit more play in it than the rest and while being out of alignment it was just enough to make that sound when it came into contact with one of the sprockets. Just a wild quess, but it would explain why now the noise is gone. I am glad to hear it was apparanytly nothing major. Get it back together and go drive, yeah! that's the ticket!

It's together, it is sweet sounding, and I like driving it again!

You may want to consider changing out your cam chain as the misalignment may have stressed the links. If it was a single row then you may also wish to think about a double row. The remaining 0.010" doesn't sound like a big misalignment but you should think about aligning it right up.

If this was your only problem then I think you got off real cheap.
