My new to me engine has a vented valve cover. I can't see any reason to have it vented since my tappet cover is vented. I'm not running any air polution stuff so my question is shouldn't the tappet cover vent be adequate? Thanks in advance, Bill

Not knowing the information about your car and engine, I would suspect that you at one time had charcoal canisters over against the firewall on the passenger side. If the canister is missing and you have no other place to plumb the fumes such as your carbs, run a long hose that dumps the fumes down below and behind distributor and water valve next to the trans.

Right now it just has a hose barb threaded into the valve cover. When I was enjoying it tearing up and down the driveway, it's got a mild cam so loves to rev, it will toss some oil out the barb. My fear being if I use a hose and do what I figure I'll do with the car (run the wheels off it) I'm concerned that at higher rpms the sucker will fling oil out the hose. I don't think I can get enough hose vertically to drop it back in the cover. The 72 did have a canister and the inlet housing has a hose barb but again don't really want oil there if I can help it since they're the same height. The orginal engines never turned the rpm's or got as much oil to the top end as this one seems to. At " normal" rpm's it isn't an issue. But what fun is that?

That is your problem. The oil has no restriction from leaving. Check out the stock valve cover. It has a small hole in the vent pipe that naturally restricts oil from exiting but allows blowby to pass.
