The best way is to remove the six screws at top rail. Take off top

He's almost surely asking about the vinyl on hard tops.

No real trick to removing it, per se. Just get an edge loose and start shredding it back- usually the glue is so dried out that it's not too hard. Not too pretty, but not too hard. You can count on stripping what's left of the glue off , priming and repainting the roof down to the body seams.

dont know about others but mine is a fiberglass hardtop with the vinyl look embossed in the gelcoat - no taking that off without major effort

Henry's done this before! Same with my son and I on his 69 Caddy - Landau roof removal. Sucks big time getting the glue off but it mostly just blows off as powder if you use one of those Scotchbrite wheels/disks. Wear a face mask! God only knows what was in that crap back then.

If you are replacing it, they still sell the glue, only it is better now. We ran into areas of bubbling rust underneath and had to do some R&R here and there, but again, not bad. If you are lucky, you won't have much of that. As said, go back down to bare metal and start over. The materials we have today are way better than what they had then, and if you are already that far into the project, you might just as well provide a new and better bonding surface.

The hard-top I had also had the vinyl look molded into the gelcoat, not glued on.

I'm sorry, I haven't made myself clear.........I'm referring to the "MGB-GT"....But there were many cars especially in the 70's that had vinyl (cloth) roofing..........

No need to apologize- you actually did make yourself clear...

Back in the 70's , body shops often ran a "special" ... free vinyl top with all over paint job. The big three were responsible for a lot of those tops from the factory, but a lot were put on by upholstery shops and body shops selling people on this " upgrade".

I have a shitty universal sunroof on my GT which is too big and needs to be removed. I don't think I could ever get a patch to blend on so adding a vinyl roof might be an option. Anyone have pictures?

My 74 has a vinyl roof. You can see it in my profile, sorry but my computer went down so I just fired up a new one and don't have any pics on it to attatch.
