'63B, 18G engine, brand new water pump. Spun freely before it went on and now that it's tightened down there's a lot of resistance and it sounds like the impeller is rubbing inside. Any experience with such a problem? Is it poor manufacturing, incorrect installation? Is it fixable?

Wrong pump or the impeller was not pressed on to the shaft far enough. If you press it further make sure you don't go too far and have it hit the pump body.

Take it back and get a different one.
