Ruby ( '69 MGB ) needs some new skins... I've decided on 175/70's for the wire wheels with handling and low noise being the most important factors - moderate driving style with the occasion bit of 'spirit'. ;) She's a summer driver so great rain/wet capabilities aren't necessary. The Tire Rack has lots of feedback on tires but every vote for a particular brand has one against it. (Sumitomo HTR200's look like a good bet but I can't seem to find them here in the lower mainland). So what does the community at large recommend?
Thanks, Pete.

Put some Kumho Touring tires on the GT last year, they sucked the life out of a fine handling car. The studded tires in the winter were literally better. I just put two new HTR200's n the rear and so far, so good.
Just put HTR 200's on about 2 weeks ago. They have about 0.5 miles on them now, but OH what a nice 0.5 miles!
If you can find them, I highly recommend Pirelli P6000 185/65x14. The 65 and 70 series straddle the correct size so there isn't much speedo error (theoretically 2 or 3%). I've got the Sport Veloce variant - I think that means they are All Season.
I vote for HTR200's for performance and price. Great tire. It's load and speed rating are a good match to the MGB.
It's a performance tire, so treadware and tire life is a bit shorter compared to a touring tire.
As long as your wheels are balanced, rims true, and alignment kept in spec, they'll last a long time.
If you don't check the softer compound tires frequently, you'll be amazed at how much wear you can put on them in a few thousand miles if you're running out of balance or your alignment is off.
I run HTR200s in 185/70/14 on my GT.
I've been using Firestone Firehawk Indy-500's. Pretty good all season performance tire. No comlaints, got them when they were on sale and the reviews were favorable on Tire Rack. When its time I'll get a summer tire next.
Douglas is a low-priced Goodyear clone and I'm very happy with the ones I have...
My 74 BGT came with Pirelli Centuratos as original equipment. They do not make them anymore. I bought the Pirelli P400 Touring 185/70/14 from Tire Rack. They fit the original size 14" 60-spoke wire wheels just fine with no rubbing issues. I like them alot.
Uniroyal 185 70 on our 79, they ride and handle well in all weather conditions.
I had Uniroyal Tiger Paws on my '77 MGB for a little while before I sold it. However, I didn't really push the car all that much during that time (it was rather sickly) so I can't comment on their performance abilities.
I recently purchased some Kumho Ecsta KH11's for my P-car and boy do I like 'em. I don't know if these are made in a typical MGB size, though.

PEte, as a fellow Vancouverite, i recomend you Felken Ze512. Falken is made by Sumitomo rubber Co. So they are fantastic tires.
i have 195-60-14s on my car now. Got them from Kal Tire for $480 installed.
Fastest car in autocross ride these tires in the rain. I also run these tires in racing and streets. Great tires for the money. They are a bargain!
Toyo TS-1 are lightwieght and great for sticking to the pavement! Rim/Tire weight is crucial in performance, good old rotational mass physics equations!
Falken Ziex 512s, 185/65X14s. $55/tire plus install @ Sears (USA), on sale. Normally, I don't much care for Sears, but since they don't make the tires....
Hello,
I have Sumitomo 185/70 R14's on my aluminum wheels. This is the best choice if there is no chance of snow or ice. I keep Yokohama Avid T4's 175/70 R14's on my Rostyle's just in case it gets icy. No more miles than most of up put on our cars, the soft Sumitomo's will get old +5-10 years and need replacement due to age before tread life becomes an issue. Also they are super cheap.
I've been torn between Michelin's and the Cooper Lifeliner classicII series in 175/70 series. The 'thin' whitewall against wire wheels gives a certain retro look without being too gaudy. The Bearcar needs a new set of shoes and I cannot really decide. The Coopers are hard to find around here anyway.
I'm more of a traditionalist and went with Vredestein Sprint 165R14. They just look right on my "B".

175/70 on rostyles. While I like them, I have nothing to compare to-I got the car with 12 yr old brick hard dried out pirellis.
I had Michelin ZX for years and years on our MG, now running Pirelli P7's for about four years now.
Michelin Harmonys and they are fantastic. Did you say what wheels you have? I have 4.5" 60 spoke chromes and installed 185/70-14s. I did my research at Tirerack.com.
Like Chris I also like Toyos, only I could not find them in stock here at a shop that could handle the wires.
Pete,
Welcome, and a namesake addition as well. My "Ruby" (Damask Red) came with Cooper Trendsetter II, 175/75/14 A/W steel belted radials. I've had her for 3 years now and am happy with the ride and handling. Don't think they make 'em anymore and not sure what I'd replace them with.

I too just ordered the Vredestein Sprint 165R14. They got to the installer yesterday, along with the new Dayton 60 spoke chrome wires. As soon as I get some new tubes, I'll be rollin'.
Got sumitomo htr200 on my 80 B. Just an incredible tire for the price. As far as I know it is the only dedicated summer only H rated tire (at least what I could find) in a 185/70/14. Great handling (for a 185/70/14), great rain performance, great price. Expect about 20-25k (what i get anyway) on the tires before they wear out. They are about half the price of most other tires.
Just installed Michelin Radial-X on my GT. Nice ride, but handling not as crisp as the Sumis. It is an S-rated, all season, so handling is not it's strong suit. But an acceptable ride for most people.
195/65/14 Mich. MX4s on 5.5" Dayton chrome tubless spokes.
BFGoodrich touring pro 185/70-14. Were they velcro???? Excellent road holding.

That's what my 80 came with (the 76 had Dunlop SP4s, I believe). I like the Pirellis best - I've had Michelin X, some other kind of Michelin and now have Goodrich. The ones on it now (about 3-4000 miles old) were sort of squirrelly at first, but ZI guess the tread cures with use and they have a better feel now. Wish they still made the Pirellis like came on it.
Michelin Pilots 195/65-15. Don't particularly like them- just an OK tire
Kumho Solus. Next time, I'll likely go with their "classic line" Powerstar.
