I'm doing a complete engine rebuild on my 1965 MGB engine (5 main). I guess I should replace the oil pump while I'm in there. I saw a rebuilt "higher flow" pump on ebay for $70. would this be an upgrade? or should I just get a stock one?
I have a new relief valve and spring already (stock)
thanks in advance.

Unless you're racing or requiring high flow, use a stock. I put my extra cash in high compression pistons & an uprated cam.....

I always thought 65's were 3 ? Don't know anything much more than my 74 though....

Best of luck.

When I rebuilt my engine I asked my friend (head mechanic for the local ambulance company and hot rod engine builder) about this. He told me to go with the stock pump. He said that a high flow pump can cause the oil to spray too much and not get enough on the poston walls. He likened it to using a high pressure nozle on a hose--a lot of the water splashes off of what you're spraying instead of getting it wet.

A lot of these "higher flow" pumps are a fraud. While they can be physically larger, often they are poorly cast and machined to lesser tolerances that the originals. A stock pump will work just fine. RAY

Justin, There really are 2 oil pumps for your car but not the one on eBay. The "high flow" pump I see on ebay is a re-manufactured pump. Someone took an old pump, made the pick up gallery bigger (and mis-spelled the word) and installed a new impeller. That does nothing if the housing is worn at all. Stay away.

New oil pumps come in standard and high flow. The high flow pumps have just been cleaned up a bit to improve flow. That hand clean-up is expensive. Moss gets $123.95 for the high flow pump and $76.95 for the standard one. I can get them to you for $105 for the high flow and $56 for the standard one. PM or call if you'd like to save some money (again.) Thanks. Basil 707.762.0974
