My '79 still has the ZS, but I'm thinking of upgrading. WeberCarbDirect offers the 34 DGEC and the 32/36 DGEV. Which way should I go, or should I consider another option? I want a reliable driver--no plans to race or rally. Thanks!

I would go with the 34 series. I found this Jeep link that may be of interest....look towards the bottom at entry #22 or 23

Thanks. I'm taking the car to my British car specialist tomorrow--if he can't get the ZS to run any better I'll probably pull the trigger on the 34 soon. BTW the Jeep post mentioned an HEI coil. I bought a Lucas Sport Coil that will be installed soon. Someone botched up my ignition wiring so we're going to put it on a scope and sort it out.

I have a 32/36 DGV with a manual choke on my 79. I love it. My mechanic set it up for me so I can't give any advice about that. In 7,000 miles he has adjusted it once because it was idling a little fast.

I just put a SU HIF4 on my 1500 and love it? Just ook a few mods. Total cost was about $50. Other than the air filter.

Another thought if you have to replace the Zenith carb is going to SU's using the European set up. John at Quantum sells them. Here is the link below. You are looking for Spitfire 1500 carbs as they are the same block

I've ordered the 34 DGEC from Weber Carbs Direct, and as they suggested also ordered a Holley fuel pressure regulator. I tried to drive to my mechanic's today so he could put on a new coil and check out the ZS, and I broke down about a mile away. My friends at AAA got me the rest of the way. Some prior owner had done an amateur rewiring of the ignition system, but we got it sorted out, put on a new Lucas sport coil and removed the ballast resister. We've got plenty of fire now--we just need consistent fuel delivery. We might have been able to rebuild the ZS, but I decided that was good money after bad.

Rik, your engine compartment looks great. I'd love to have mine looking that good. That will have to wait until I get my VB interior kit installed, though.

That's a very nice interior, you have every reason to be proud.

The pictures of Rik's car can never do it justice. It is a beautiful machine to see

We got the 34 DGEC installed. The car runs great and has lots more power, but still has a bit of a flat spot at higher rpms. My mechanic is sorting out ignition issues--the previous owner "homologated" it somewhat.

A word of caution--the stock throttle cable is a bit too short for this carb. VB tells me the Calif. cable is longer, so I ordered one.

The Midget is home, finally. When he was test-driving it, my mechanic discovered brake drag--turns out the rear hose was collapsed, causing the proportioning valve to send too much pressure to the fronts. All is now well with the brakes.

VB sold me a "California" cable that is 47" long--plenty to fit the new Weber. The car drives great, although it's running a bit rich. We're going to re-jet the carb. Once we find the magic combination of jets, I will re-post, unless someone has been through this before and has a suggestion.

I was hoping you could please send me or post a picture of your 34 Weber installed. I just bought a 79 midget with a Weber 34, but the guy I bought it from had just put it on and had not even run the car. Every time I start the car it races to about 5000rpm then starves out. Weber is not very helpful, neither was Redline. I am hoping by seeing a picture of one installed it will help me.
Thank you
