that distinctive english sports car note, you know, the one as the car pulls away from the curb and gives you that English Brmpffff as they shift. I'm thinking of maybe changing out my exhaust as its getting dated. It currently has the stock cast iron manifold and stock muffler but has a cherry bomb type resonator. I'd really like to replicate that exhaust note as it just screams LBC!

Exhaust again!! Remove the bomb and replace it with the stock resonator, SUs carburetors will help add too the British sound as well

3" SS big bore with one muffler and a straight pipe to it.

My ears are still ringing from Chris Gil's straight pipe at Gary's Run 2007!

I believe I have the note you're referring to. Twin SU carbs, stock cast iron exhaust manifold, all stainless steel with single silencer to the back.
Got mine from Moss, it's 444-165...

Mmm... just thinking about it make me want to go start the car up.

If you want the original, pure MGB sound then put on a stock exhaust. That means cast iron manifold and mild steel 1.75" pipes with resonator and muffler. Anything else will be different. How much different depends on how far you stray from the original design and materials.

No, "He's the Stig's Fat American cousin!" ....

Sorry for the Clarkson quote, but I couldn't resist; the temptation was just too great :D .

As for the whole exhaust thing, I must agree with Steve: If you want your MGB to sound like an MGB, you gotta go with an MGB exhaust! Many people like the added volume and bass of an aftermarket Peco or Monza exhaust; but In my opinion the stocker surpasses them all in the actual 'Exhaust Note'...... The soft burble at idle, building in volume and menace as you slowly depress the throttle is almost reminiscent of a WWII Hawker Hurricane. A deep sound that belays the actual size of the engine and number of cylinders. It's a sound that makes the hair on my neck stand on end just writing about it!
It's a sound I'm very familiar with, as I've had to make it myself many a late night when I'm sitting in my car.......... 'Vrrooooom! Vrrrooom! "Hitting the apex beautifully, accelerate out of the turn..." Vrrrrrrrooom, Snick, Vrrrrrooooooooom "Braking early for this next tight hairpin......... Oh shit......... Am I getting brake fade? Nah, the pedal's just missing because I need to repaint it." Vrrrroooom, Vrrrrrooom!!!!'....................

Yours Truly,
Sam

P.S. Oh and yes, for your information, this is how I spend most of my evenings :D .

Beware if you change the cast exhaust manifold. If you go to a steel exhaust manifold it will be louder even if you leave the rest of the exhaust stock. I had a crack in the cast and went to a steel and is quite a bit louder.

Peco
Despite the above I do believe it is slightly quieter than stock at speed and slightly louder at idle. you can basically roll a golf ball through it and sounds decidedly MG. The wife and i hold a very normal volume conversation at 65 mph and do not have OD.

The ranting about my lunacy may begin as soon as I hit "post Message' but that's my opinion.

Lunacy? You believe they'll think YOU are the lunatic?!?!??!?!? I just proclaimed that I spend my evenings pretending I am Jackie Stewart, in my MGB that currently possesses no motive power besides my own two feet; and you think they'll believe YOU are the crazy one?!?!?!??!? I beg to differ ;)...... Everyone has a different opinion about what an MGB is, and while no-two are the same, and some are at violent odds with each other (And how the car originally rolled off the production line.); their is no reason to say that any of them are wrong. If you like the Peco, then good for you! If you get crap from the other forum members for stating a personal preference then it's THEIR problem, and not yours......

Yours Truly,
Sam

I'm a recent convert to the Falcon Big Bore stainless, having always used stock systems prior.
Lunatics? You're both lunatics but nothing compared to a 55 year old who is launching his modeling career. :I3:
