First, the starter should crank with the key off.

Out of curiosity, can anybody tell me why the wiring allows for the engine to crank with the ignition turned off. To me it has always seemed wrong, but must be correct. Is this common for the era.

This allowed for a mechanical rather than an electrical starter switch - cheaper, more reliable, but at the same time a little crude. The only way to make the key control it is through a relay or electric solenoid switch that is hefty enough to handle the starter amps.

The key is just on/off to the electrical system. The starter is hooked directly to the battery. Remember that MGAs came with a manual cranlk that you inserted through the front bumper in case the starter failed. So the electrical system would still work even if the starter were missing or disconnected :-)

It does seem to be a crude answer, it just is a little concerning when people play with the knobs when the car is parked....eg children between the ages of 2-21.
Oh, by the way has anybody actually used their crank handle to start the car in the last 50 years.

Yes, I have used the crank, had a loose battery connection and drained the batteries. It's surprisingly easy if someone helps by blipping the throttle.
