The wiper mechanism is all cleaned and re-done, but I have a question. The car is an early '67 GT. The motor and drive are clearly late model (Astley says '68 on) but the electrical connector is missing the high speed terminal (terminal 3 on the Astley drawing, indicated on attached pic). Motor operates on normal speed.

Was there an interim generation that was just one speed? Thanks.

Steve.

No one seems to be getting this correct. Astley shows early and late roadster and describes both versions but doesn't clue into the early GT wiper motor.

The popular MGB electrical website also has incorrect information.

Edit: Fixed pdf problem. Long winded dissertation on the early GT wipers attached.

Very simply put.

Later wiper motors have internal regenerative electrical braking and two speeds. Early wiper motors have no internal braking and one speed.

The early 66-67 MGB GT got an internally regenerative braked, single speed motor.

It looks like a later motor, but does not have a high speed terminal.

The internal electrical braking requires the special dash switch and an extra wire added to the standard roadster loom. There is also a special short subharness connecting the wiper motor multi pin plug to the hybrid roadster harness and extra regenerative braking wire.

Edit: My guess is that the extra weight of the GT arms, or the windshield height was causing wind milling where the arms were rotating past the park switch point. Using a motor with regen braking stops the arms dead when the park switch shuts down.

Steve.

You did clear up one final question.

The motor used in the GT is in the same Lucas numbering sequence as the 2 speed versions, so I was not sure if the installed motor just had the socket terminal removed. Your images of the motor switch internals indicate that there is no high speed contact fitted.

thanks

Kelvin.

Kelvin,

Thanks for clearing this up. It's been 16 months since I drove the car and I don't think I ever had it out in the damp. That's a long way of saying I don't remember much about the wipers. But now that I think about it, it should have been obvious that the simple toggle switch was strictly a one speed affair. That fits with the connection arrangement in the picture of course.

I've found so many other things on this car that were updated that I even wondered if a PO had swapped out the wiper assembly for a newer one but your explanation confirms that what I've got is original.

Always appreciate your help.

Steve
