I plan to remove the wire wheels this weekend to do an inspection on my (new to me) 78 B. I read in the archives on how to remove a stubborn ww if it won't come off. But my question is what grease should I use on the splines when reinstalling the wheel? Also what should I look for on the ww damaged splines knock off damage...etc? I have no experience with ww.

any good quality high temp wheel bearing grease will do. I had 76 midget with factory ww and I would remove them and clean the splines with mineral spirits
regrease and reinstall them once a year. Gives a chance to clean the wheels thouroughly too!

I too have a B with WW and was wondering. Do the splines on the WW go bad too or is it only the hub to be concerned about? Great forum.

Yes the splines on the wheel "go bad". They round over much the same way the splines on the hubs do.

There is a great site online that details all the wire wheel issues you could imagine. I can't remember the name but I just googled "wire wheel spline wear" or some such thing. I believe it was UK based.

Maybe somebody has it bookmarked and can post it.

I pull my wheels off twice a year and clean and re-grease. I use the red, high temp stuff; as much for the color as anything. I always strike all the spokes with the spoke wrench to see if they are all in the same pitch. Occasionally if I have have been driving hard I will find a broken one to replace.

I've had Never-Seize recommended as an alternative to bearing grease - less messy. Any of you use it?
