Had a thought this afternoon - yes, I know, memorable event :)
Anyway I have some pretty daggy wire wheels that should and probably will be replaced, but that is a little down the track.
I'm trying to clean them up with out throwing too much money at them and I have noticed that I like the colour contrast of maroon and black.
I'm painting my car maroon and I wondered what the wires would look like black.
Thoughts?
Any body done it or seen it?
Chris

With all the work involved, I think you'll be sorry. JMHO. PJ
This would be a good time for you (or someone on the board) to break out their copy of PhotoShop...
I really wanted to paint mine white but was disapproved by the forum. I didn't have the guts to go against the collective wisdom.
Because of the color or because of the work to refinish? I have 1 wire wheel a different shade than the others and was planning to blast and powdercoat all 4 next time I replace tires... I do powdercoating myself (although never wire wheels yet) and didn't think the refinish would be too hard.
Quite a number of British racing teams painted their race wheels black as I recall, including MG I believe. One of the contributing editors to Classic and Sportscar drives a Red over Black Healy 100-6 with black wires. It does take a bit of getting used to, but isn't too bad when the tires are clean and not 'shiney'. I think they'd look ok with some body colors, but be a bit drab on a really dark car. Might not be too bad on a lighter body color. It's just paint, so try it , you can always spray on another coat in silver.
Black wires are cool, especially with chrome winged knock-offs. What the hell, it's only paint! If you were allergic to extra work you wouldn't be restoring an mg.
A lot of the older cars had them painted contrasting colors and they looked goo, I thought. A Jag XKE I saw at a show last year had EVERYTHING in safety yellow, including the wires. Different. To me, not bad. It was getting a lot of looks.
I agree with Andrew. I asked this question about a year ago and got quite an earful from the forum for even considering it.
I think (like Ryan) that the black wheels look really cool with chrome knockoffs.
I say do it.
Seems like some of the old ones had red rims and hubs, and black spokes.
I started toying with the idea as well Chris. I am deciding between two colors for my GT... blue or grey. If I go with grey I am going to finish the rest of my wires in red. Should be classy/sporty.
Looks nasty on the Jag but nice on the Morgan.
I'd give the black a try, except that I don't have wires!

Jack, You must have been at the Charleston show. Right? PJ
Thanks for the thoughts.
I'm going to get the wires shot blasted and he will prime them too. I'm still not sure, I'll probably stick with grey or a silver, but I do like the black wires with the white side walls.
Hmm. maybe I will do them black - Hmm. Maybe not - Hmm. Maybe grey - Hmm. Maybe silver - Hmm. Maybe same colour as car - Hmm. maybe ............. SLAP!
Chris
Wires are easy to paint. If you dont like it, do it again.
That Jag owner should be shot however (what is with the ricer door mirrors?)

Carl, I don't know the owner personally, but have talked to him a few times at shows and he is a very nice elderly man who seems to have taken a more artistic approach in the restoration of his Jag. It's an absolutely beautiful restoration, no doubt about it! But with his artistic flavor, I can see him using those mirrors.

Chris have him prime them with black primer then you can make a judgment. If you like it top coat black if not go with silver. This way you do not have to repaint if the black isn't what you like.
There is the option of charcoal colored superlights down the road.

Flat out like a lizzard drinking
Chris...You have got me thinking about black wires on a Bronze yellow body???
I think they look pretty nice on this MGA that I had a hand in restoring:

Definitely an old-school look to those.
Thanks for all your responses, however, all you've done is confused me more.
I'm getting the rims sand blasted later this week after taking off the tires and tubes last Sunday. (by hand, I might add)
Car's on jack stands now and it's a little inconvenient right now so I need to decide quickly.
I stiil like the idea of black - partly to be a bit different - but I'm just not sure. I'll probably chicken out and go with silver.
What was the original colour?
Was it Silver or Grey?
Thinking also of using POR15 on the outside, under the tyre. Any downsides for this - apart from not being able to tune the spokes again.
Chris
Wow they look great on the "A" so what do do think about the Bronze yellow match...maybe not???

Sorry, Paul, I sort of thought you were more thinking out loud.
I actually think the black would look good on a lighter colour, like yellow. But, I'm not sure I'd be game to do it.
As my last post indicated, I'm still in 3 minds as to what to do with mine. I'm certainly not after original with my recovery - I just want tastful.
I've already deviated from the 'original' colour scheme with my suspension rebuilds.
As you can see from these pics.

One of my concerns is that if I deviate too much the car will end up looking a bit like a licorice allsort.
