I love Hap's K&N filter setup that utilizes the Cooper's backplates and the RU-4410 filters: Elegant simplicity.
A few of my customers have wanted the same simplicity, but a prettier look that also balanced the engine bay a bit better. I really believe that this is the K&N filter set that Peter Burgess refers to in his book. This kind of depth will work with the original Cooper's stubs. All that is needed is to Dremel clearance on the side of the stub flanges to clear the filter mount studs, and one of several different ways to sink the mounting bolts into the stubs. With the cover plates and elements removed, access for balancing and fuel adjustment is simple, and only 2 nuts and lockwashers are removed.
Adam Stockwell granted me levity to put together the SU set and filters for his '68. So I set the filters up as they are on my '68 roadster, and I love the setup. Pics: http://britcarfun.com/images/AdamStockwell/

I think I still like my 4410s, they sure make tuning and maintaining the carbs a lot easier, one twist with a screw driver on each one and the filters come right off.

PS, I am going to send you a message in a second.

Hey Mac! That is just a stock (pre '70) setup. I have been making up the lines only because I have not been happy with the lines I have gotten from Moss. The originals are still around, and the Moss lines have repeatedly sprung leaks in about 2 years.

Blake, I assume that you are happy with the setup? I love it on my '68. I am sure that this is not new, just another perspective.
Jimmy this is the setup you did for me.....similar. I'm happy.
Here were my HS4s after Hap rebuilt them last year. He is now doing a set of HS6s for me. I sold these to my dad.
What I like about these is that it is all one piece. Undo the bolts to the studs and voila. The custom heat shield is not recommended for street applications. That is why the headers are wrapped.

Hi Bruce, I do like that setup as well!! A bit more finicky to install, but is effective and looks great!

Hey Fred, good stuff!!
That is Hap's elegant simplicity setup with the K&N RU 4410's. Yep your stock heat shield is a bit invisible!! But you look mighty well setup. Your Dad should love them!
We are close to winding up with most of the likely K&N setups in this thread. We are still missing the Bob filters, and Rusty's filter caps that both use the same K&N stock replacement filter. Also missing are the K&N 1.75" deep setup.
Thanks Jimmy i cant wait to get my hands on the carbs (gloved hands of course!) Now i just need to make my engine look just as good.
Hey David,
You brought one I have not seen or thought about. Any pics of the inside?

The camera makes it look a little more red than it really is....
That paint is the MG Maroon engine paint from POR. Its really nice paint.
There is no backing plate on this setup Jimmy. The filter clamps around the outside rim of the carb horn like Hap's setup.
I also have the exact setup Jimmy described on my '72; it works well. Initially I omitted the Cooper stacks, but after reading about Hap's setup I acquired an old set of backplates and made the necessary mods. The car seems to run noticably better with the stacks. Well worth doing if you've already taken the plunge with the 3.5" K&N's.
Hey Jimmy,
scroll back up to the bright red photo of my engine....
the valve cover has a vent that had a hose going to the cooper cans....
any suggestions what i should do with the vent with this new setup? thanks!
Just get a vent filter they sell at autozone, advance, pepboys, oreillys, etc. It is just a little mesh filter designed to catch the oil as the engine vents.

I use the K&N stub stax inside the 6" round filters.
haven't seen/felt difference between them and nothing (just the flat K&N plate)
Is this a performance gain or a look-cee thing. I'm running the K&N without the stock backing plates but I could put them on if they really improve something?????

Hey Bruce,
Yes that fitting on the VC was to the front Coopers can backplate. A couple of options have been mentioned, but I think if it were me that I would run a hose from the fitting and between the filters, and downward to act as a draft tube.
For a minute, looking at your photo, I thought that I had reversed your fuel bowl mount grommets. After studying for a bit, I realized the whole engine was tipped toward the drivers side. ;)
